He's out in the grass now, soaking up some morning sun. We take him out to let him try to pee, and most of the time he won't. Just now I turned my back and he got up and walked to a "better" spot in the yard for peeing.

I didn't know he had a preference.

Now that you've found his pee spot, take him there every time.
Then, move him to a comfortable spot so he can make sure all the neighborhood is intact and worth an occasional bark.

I was gonna say that I might go get a couple Ambiens but if the dog sleeps, I'm down for the count.
