Wifey and I went to botanical gardens in salt lake and they did that with apple trees, kinda bent them around steel fenceing material. Anyway made an arc you could walk through with apples hanging down . Very cool

Soon we may see pics of oddly shaped tomatoes.

While crossing I came across flowers that help illustrate where and how these shapes often come about. I made a collage showing the potential results of two I spotted this AM.

It all has to do with how the ovaries or the style form. Styles are actually a conglomerate of tubes which fuse together and lead to the ovules in the ovary. When some do not completely fuse they often make "appendages".

When an ovary forms things can go wrong with cell division and two ovules form seperately after that critical point in cell division has been altered.

There is some genetic tendency for these two traits to occur. They come from multiple ovule fruits - think beefsteaks - most often. Usually they occur because something in the environment effected cell division or some metabolic aspect of growth (changes to hormones). Common environmental factors include UV light, temperature, chemical exposure and.or pests/diseases.

Another common cause of misshapen fruit are floral parts which do not shed after fertilization takes place and the fruit begins to grow. These often make scars or pinched shapes. Sometimes such a result is called "cat-facing".

For the most part Grumpy Cat (me) is not impressed with most of these dark lines.

They originally get their color from 2 different wild species and there is some perceivable carry over for negative taste from the wild parents. At least perceivable to me. I've sampled several kinds of wild tomatoes most wouldnt have the opportunity to try. My advice, Don't/  Many are bitter or astringent in taste. Kinda like putting a dab of alum in your mouth (what happened to the yacking emoticon?).

Anyway I keep trying to improve that by crossing the advancements into good flavored backgrounds and hopefully retain the "blue" and get rid of that genetic drag.

I grew out more than 70 different lines this year and they are just starting to ripen. I have had just one so far that was better than average, It had some sweetness and I really didnt get the sense of that wild flavor as much.

A number of other people acquired the original breeding lines (or some form of them) as I had. They seemed to be focused on putting them into "pretty" backgrounds, Out of the ones I have tried just one was okay. The others barely made average and still had that wild taste.

Examples of other's:
http://tatermater.proboards.com/thread/412/seattles-blue-woolly-mammoth
http://www.wildboarfarms.com/wild-boar-farms-tomato.html

Here are some from the field. I think they look better before they ripen.

All the ones above are from this project which explains the background of the blue trait and some of what I have done with it over the past few years (I havent updated it this year).

Outdoor gardens have taken a major hit this year between way too much rain and attacks from Hurricane Maggie (our big goofy lab).  However the greenhouse is producing just fine:

Those plants lined up on the shelf are Cocoa, they are doing quite well.  And of course the Tilapia are getting big!
