i seem to remember that one of the keys to taking advantage of going outside for natural sunlight for a few minutes is that you then have to be sure not to shower or wash your skin for a few hours, because part of the process of your body making it's own vitamin D has to do with how the skin processes it's exposure to the light.
so...my little walks in the afternoon during work are just enough. my face, arms, neck are all exposed, and i work the rest of the day, and don't necessarily shower until the next morning....

Indeed. An atmosphere that hadn't been destroyed by several millennia of forest burning and the industrial revolution.

People living in Northern hemispheres (esp. above 45th parallel) do indeed need to supplement Vitamin D within their diet.
(it's a bit of challenge to not want to soak up that glorious warm sunshine after months of gray) M.D. recently explained even people living in sunny areas such as Florida, Arizona who are protecting their skin from the sun, are showing up with low D levels.
The sun/light is a quick remedy for upping D levels, other alternatives are available.
Any SPF over 45 is ineffective.

The sun/light is a quick remedy for upping D levels, other alternatives are available. It is expected that the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine will soon increase the minimum daily requirement level of vitamin D. Recent studies have indicated the current MDR is too low for a full contribution to good health in the adaptive and innate immune systems, the secretion and regulation of insulin by the pancreas, the heart and blood pressure regulation, muscle strength and brain activity. In addition, access to adequate amounts of vitamin D is believed to be beneficial towards reducing the risk of cancer. People over 50 need twice the level of vitamin D as younger adults. By the way, vitamin D is a hormone, not a true vitamin.
