You would change your mind I you travelled to any country in the middle of Europe.

When I enter my car and take some time I can reach

  • Denmark (4 hours)
  • Netherlands (3,5 hours)
  • Poland (5 hours)
  • France (8 hours)
  • Belgium (5 hours)
  • Switzerland (7 hours)
  • Austria (7 hours)
  • Czech (6 hours)
  • Luxemburg (7 hours)
  • Spain (20 hours)
  • Greece (18 hours)

Everywhere you will meet a (at least slightly) different culture and language. That's why it's normal for us to differ between the countries.

 No offense, you know me, just my 2 cents. {#Daisy}

 @Rose:

Enjoy your time in one of the most exciting and colourful cities in the heart of Europe. Amsterdam is breathtaking.

Hey... I was only funning! I've been to and through England, Scotland, Ireland, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy. I am thankful for the difference! Slovenia, I must say, is one of the most beautiful countries I have been in...

I really think you'll enjoy Europe.

Nationalism is sort of ingrained all over the continent but in my opinion not very spread nowadays. Of course most of the people are proud of their country, and this is fine. Helps to keep different cultures alive (the dying of different cultures is on of the main problems of the EU, everything is going to be harmonized and often loses its own character) even in the younger generation(s).

But aggressive nationalism is something I do not expect you to be faced up with.

I live in Hannover in the north of Germany, round about 100 km away from Hamburg, what you probably may know...

I love Europe.  Probably because my parents moved here as adults (Mom is Danish, Dad is Hungarian) so all that culture feels right to me.

I've been through Hannover!  In 2007 we made an epic 2-day drive from Hungary to Denmark (stayed one day in Aalborg (for a birthday), then went back).  We stayed in Fulda (just to sleep really) and I think I remember stopping to eat in Hannover.  It's beautiful country.

When Justine first moved here, my sister lived in Laramie. We went down there for Thanksgiving, and when we got out of the car Justine looked around and said "last time I traveled that uncomfortably for that long, I wound up in LONDON!" She was quite miffed to only be in Laramie.

Ye-es.  That's a very simplistic view of the problems with the Euro.  Basically you have to imagine a whole fleet of cars with different performance potential, different ages, different fuels etc ie the differences in economies between say Ireland, Greece and Germany.  Some of them don't comply with some minimum standards that have been set either.  Then you set them off on the road and see what happens.  Funnily enough your Euro-cars won't all travel at the same speed or arrive at the destination at the same time for various problems.  That is the problem with trying to hold together a currency that floats in international markets together against 16 countries varying economic performance.

As for issues with Nationalism the fact that we have had genocide within the last 15 years is of a far bigger concern to me than the impact on the Euro of Nationalism- and I am very worried about the state of the Euro.

Just wait, it'll get real short real fast.

Have fun!  Remember that there are some great things to do in Amsterdam that have nothing to do with smoking dope.  There's the Heineken Brewery tour, for example... {#Lol}

When I was a teenager, I met my mom in Amsterdam as a getaway from the town in West Germany where I was.  The whole time all she wanted to do was stare at paintings at the Rijksmuseum, and all I wanted to do was sample free beer and cheese at the Heineken and Amstel breweries.

The nice thing about old cities like that is that you can go just about anywhere and see some interesting culture and architecture.  I've had a couple of layovers in Amsterdam while traveling abroad, and as an adult I found it fun to just walk around and soak up the ambiance, enjoy some food and drink etc.  Much more fun when you don't try to see everything.

Well that is all very well and fine for you Over-the-Ponders to say... but here in the USA we are embarrassedly confused as to whether our dear rosedraws is going to the Netherlands (or is it Nederlands?), Holland or Flanders or Fleming... or is Rhineland, or just the Kingdom? Though of course, never (no more) Dietsland. Or might she be going to Benelux? But, god forbid, let us not make the faux pas of saying she is  going to Friesland!

And while there in Amsterdam will she be visiting the Dutch, or Nederlanders, Hollanders, the Flemish – or is that the Flemings? –  or the Vlaams?
