I heard a DJ on KEXP play Pulp "Common People" and after it was over he says "a listener wrote in that there's a cover of that by William Shatner! Wow! I'll have to check it out!" and then today someone shared Pulp on the facebook and I mentioned that I heard a rumor that there are people who don't know about the cover and people are losing their minds in a bad way. Blasphemy! What an ego! And I thought okay I'll just sit here thinking Shatner's is better and feeling sorry for them.
Then I thought, "Thanks, RP!" I never would have heard it, either, without RP.
I first heard Shatner's version when I was staying for a few weeks on Haight Street in San Francisco (long story) with 3 gay guys at about the height of their pre-aids giddy freedom. It was pretty interesting to parachute into that culture. One of the housemates had both Shatner's and Leonard Nimoy's albums. Which is all sort of a way of saying that music is woven into our lives (and I heard it before you, ha!).
Me? I had a crush on one of the lesbians upstairs, :shrug.

I've mentioned this here many times before. Seems like a good time to bring it up again.
My earliest profundity about religion as an emerging adult happened when I saw a Rabbi on the old Mike Douglas Show circa 1969 when he was still based in Philly.
The Rabbi's words were simple. God created earth and man created religion. He had me at "Hello !" on that one.
I have looked at organized religion with that POV ever since.
Same here. I had my first inclination of that at age 10 when my priest revealed himself to be an alcoholic who cruelly emotionally abused children within his parish, including me. I rejected Catholicism a few years later when I had enough time to process it. I tried other religions & none of them passed muster. I came to understand myself as a spiritual human being with a close relationship to a higher power of my own understanding. After that spiritual awakening everything fell into place.
But thatâs just my story. Some people find what they need from their chosen religion. To each their own, just donât force your beliefs upon me. God bless the separation of church & state enshrined in our Constitution. Some inspired wisdom there.
