I bought a pastel ground that Golden makes.  It's a little expensive, but it's cool to be able to do pastel drawings on things like wood, wallpaper, or mixed collages.

Yeah, their stuff is pricey, but it's the best on the market, IMO. They have a product they developed a couple of years ago called a "digital ground" that's designed for inkjet printers. The idea is that you coat paper or fabric with this stuff, send it through your printer, and the dye-based inks will bond with the ground, making it permanent. I'm betting that would world for ballpoint pens, too, though I've never tried it myself.

I seldom used ballpoint pens anymore for anything other than writing, but I didn't know about grounds for applying ballpoint ink to paper.  I still do a great deal of pen and ink drawing, usually with India inks and/or more light-fast mediums, and I usually protect my work with a UV-resistant coating.  Yes, art works in museums are rarely displayed anywhere near windows - some rooms in the MMA in NYC are almost entirely dark, with special lighting aimed at the pieces - usually drawings.

They do, the ink is dye-based and therefore highly impermanent. There are grounds that you can apply to a substrate to make dye-based inks more permanent, and there are products you can finish with that will also help. Ultimately, every medium has its drawbacks in terms of archivability; the keys are using the proper grounds and varnishes, and lessening their exposure to both UV and air. (Have you ever noticed that fine arts museums rarely have a lot of windows? The National Museum of Fine Arts, in DC, has no windows that can shine or reflect UV onto the works!)

Amazing work.  I wonder if they used any UV coating or varnish for those pieces - most writing pen inks notoriously fade and/or discolor (in my experience).
