I don't think there is a universal answer because music is inextricably entwined with the musicians, the music industry, and our own experiences.

I don't believe that a song can be judged independently from it's context but by the same time there are times I will cut a musician a lot of slack for being a wanker when listening to something that transcends their shitfuckery. I'm looking at you, Paul Simon (sometimes). Yeah, you too Van Morrison.

And then there is the stuff I can't really deal with for reasons other than someone's political, social, or sexual shortcomings. I usually can't deal with listening to Eliot Smith or Amy Winehouse because they pissed me off so much by corkscrewing themselves into the ground. I mean those fuckers could have learned from the experience of the earlier generations of rock and roll deaths.

Found this online earlier and remembered the conversation from a couple of years ago. Also, two years later and Taylor Swift is making some genuinely good music, so who would have thunk it?

I agree; went thru this a few years ago with the Kim Fowley
stories and it comes up again and again. I'm just sort of surprised
that so far I've seen zero support of him; no one coming out in his
defense. :lol: Last straw was probably the entire album of Taylor Swift
covers.

Hey, I liked that album of Taylor Swift covers. But he's still a creep
and has been removed from the RP playlist, at least for now.

Well he got out of the child pornography charge because he was doing "research" for a documentary he never made.   But truth is I really don't care, he is a great songwriter and has absolutely nothing to do with his sexuality.   That is my only point and again, it is more important that I do not censor myself from music I like than withholding a few bucks from an artist to make a point, but I have no issue with those that do.  Like you said, t

I'm not sure that that's true about PT. I was pretty into the whole thing when it came out, and it's still not clear to me that he did anything illegal, or that he is actually into kids. (OH! and there's a whole thread devoted to him, so you can go back and see if you want!)

I don't know about listening to their music, I  try not to spend $ on artists who've done shitty things to people. But to each his own.
