Unfortunately I was never a student of history, until now, however it seems to me that national boundaries were very fluid in previous centuries, so what happened in Ireland wasn't unique in a European or world context. I believe the real tragedy of Ireland in the 20th century is that the violence inhibited earlier political change, by driving both sections of the community far apart. Having both Irish and British heritage I understand that my perspective is only one of many but I respect the differing views of my Irish brothers and sisters and I have no doubt that at some point in the future, provided all parties agree, Ireland will move towards and achieve unification. Perhaps by that time, rights based agendas will have become exclusively agendas based on shared interests. Politics is a messy corrupt business, but its infinitely better than the violence that destroyed the lives of my generation.

name that changed was the name of the council from Londonderry Council to Derry Council and the name of the city and county remains the same as LONDONDERRY. Lets not confuse the tourists, though maybe its too late for that! Wikipedia (if its correct) cites a High Court case in 2006 where the Royal Charter naming the city Londonderry was upheld. I'm sure we'd both like lots of things to be different in the province though, with respect, I'd say that altering the facts helps no one and no cause.....certainly not community relations. I do agree with ya on the 'rip-off Republic' though. Its been fun seeing US friends visiting here, go pale when they go to the tills in shops or pubs. While I'm still exploring the twenty-six southern counties and don't know the country that well yet, I'd suggest that if people have the time, they should do North and South. The South does have a well developed capacity for removing dollars from passing tourists and some practices are so blatant its shocking, but every part of the Republic is extremely rich with history and I think there are useful contrasts to be seen between places and peoples in all four corners of the island. New Derry City name change row brews Published Date: 29 May 2009 Derry City Council have written to a range of community representatives across the city asking for their views on its plan to lobby the Privy Council to have the name of the city officially changed to Derry. Letters were sent out earlier this week as part of a consultation process on the controversial name change issue. The letter states that Council is eager to gain the views of a number of interested parties about the issue to "reflect the need for a clear identity and to reflect the wishes of the vast majority of the citizens while respecting the views of all sections of the community." The move has sparked an angry reaction from some unionists in the city who have criticised Derry City Council for using council resources to try to change the name of the city. A council spokesperson said: "Derry City Council agreed it would undertake an Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) on its decision to make an application to the Privy Council to have the formal name of the city changed from Londonderry to Derry. The Council has issued the EQIA to all of its equality consultees and will consider all responses at a meeting of Council in early Autumn."<- MPUMinCharsCutOff:210 PageLength:969 MPUPositionFromStart:250 MPUPositionRange:1000 hasVideoOrImage:False ->

Forgot to mention.....should anyone be coming to Cork, I'd be happy to help ya with stuff to do and see. Been here four years now and know the place reasonably well, though of course, as stated in the Irish Toutist Board website is a major pastime here!
