I'm about half-way thru with it.  Interesting fictional biography of abolitionist John Brown, as seen by his son Owen Brown.

Worthwhile read; a fascinating study of father-son, family relationships, sanity, religious fanaticism, radicalizations' consequences, violence vs non-violence & life during pre-Civil War times.  Author, Russell Banks is covering a lot of territory here.

Here is the list in my shopping basket so far.  I won't buy for a few days as otherwise I'll read them all before we leave!!  Anyone is welcome to suggest a few more- I usually get through about a ten books on a fortnights holiday.  Slightly fewer with the kids maybe.....The tiny one is Late Season by Cristobel Kent.  Sadly no new Sue Grafton books out at the moment- they are always good for a holiday read.  I could probably do with fewer crime books but not to worry.  Several books in translation as usual.  No books based in contemporary Britain as usual (I have quite enough of that at home).  A reasonable split between the sexes in terms of authors (Andrea is a boy and Lindsey is a girl)- I have noted that HJ rarely reads books authored by a woman- I don't think he has any objection in principle to women authors but their books don't seem to grab him.

Well I read the Kate Atkinson book "When will there be good news" (finished it last night).  Did I enjoy it- well- it wasn't exactly a fun story although I took very much to the 3 central female sharacters.  I was a pretty gripping read with a very well thought out plot with some unexpected twists.  Some of it wouldn't have stood up to a challenge (like some of the police procedural stuff) but I have no problem with that sort of thing for the sake of a good story.  All in all I did enjoy it- I was keen to find out what happened, I cared about the protagonists, I didn't want to put it down til it was finished.  I probably wouldn't reread it because it was a bit dark in places (especially the opening scene which was horrible but set up the story).  I would be more likely to read one of her books in the future.  I'll give it 4 stars out of 5 recommended.

Her books always have some darkness.  Something very very bad happened to Ms. Atkinson  I think because there's always something dark with kids in it......
thanx for your review Ms HJ

Hey now, was that the one with the civilisation living inside an enormous rotating space thing? Because I remember something about that from way back; gosh...off to the library tomorrow!

I think she is a talented author but have failed to complete on one of her books before so was a bit wary.  This one strikes a chord -horrible scene at the start though reminiscent of a very well known murder case in this country.

For me- Austen, Garcia Marquez, MM Kaye, Dorothy Sayers and a bit of Tolkien are probably my favourite 5 although HJ would add in Goergette Heyer for light relaxation and a bit of a dig.  Oops- but in terms of wow authors I forgot George Elliot and Tolstoy and, and.......

I'd like to make it clear that I in no way endorse the publications of Ms Heyer as I have never read them. Stacked them up; hell, rescued errant pages rent from their spine. But never read them. But I can at least spoll her name correctly.
