Yeah, and we totally suck at it!  See Noriega, Hussein, et al.  Hey, you know how foreign gov'ts., corps., & individuals have tried to influence our past elections by dumping money into one side or another and then we were all in an uproar about it?  That's called karma.

So it looks like it is possible to over-throw Arab dictatorships without bombing their people back into the stoneage. Who knew?

I disagree. The very people who are in power now (only just) are no better than fundamentalists themselves. Although some fundamentalists may try and fill the vacuum in the short term, I really believe the people there want fairness and a government they can trust. If fundamentalists took over and they people were not happy they would soon boot them out too. A good friend of mine who has been in Egypt quite a while over the last few months was saying just recently that there is a growing movement there, especially amongst the young that they want to be part of a more modern world. The internet has really opened up some people's eyes in these sort of countries, information has been easier to find and slowly these people are waking up and saying enough is enough. This may sound off topic but my friend who was there is gay and from his experience and from his conversations with other gay and gay friendly Egyptians they are sick and tired of the opression they face. Away from the people in power many of the people are changing their views about many many issues, their own religion, their sexuality, women's rights being three major ones and so the last thing the people want is a fundamentalist power. They won't stand for it, that's my impression anyway. We shall see.

The people can wish for what they want, but what they will get will not be up to them unless they are very careful, or lucky. The current Egyptian regime is no pussy cat, that is for sure, but it has been dealing with fundamentalists for some years (remember the blowing and shooting of several tourist groups) - so they are there, waiting for their opportunity. If the fundamentalists get power, they will keep it - witness Afghanistan when the Taliban ruled. Out of the frying pan and into the fire for you mates gay friends I fear. This is an entirely different situation to Poland, Hungary etc when the vast majority saw the fall of Communism as an opportunity to instantly switch from one political system to another, it is far more akin to Yugoslavia - let the pressure off and many parties will emerge, with guns, wanting to do things their way and their way only. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.
