Beaker wrote: If it isn't caused by a flawed add-in (disable them all, see if the problem is gone, then enable one at a time to find the culprit), then you should look at a total reinstall of FF.
Uninstall, wipe out the remnants in the program files area folders, and reinstall from a fresh download.
Of course, save your bookmarks first.
Just tried that - no joy. (Thanks for the tip, though.) Apparently I'm not the only one finding FF 3.01 to be pretty unstable. Anyone tried Google's Chrome yet?

Ever since I upgraded to Firefox 3.01, it's been crashing several times a day on me. It especially seems to hate Flickr - every time I try to upload my photos to Flickr, Firefox crashes. The old version never used to do that.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Not sure what you mean by "prettying it up and dumbing it down"... it is definitely more accessible to almost every user group than most browsers. Stripped down version for the basic user (if that's what you call dumb) and 100s and 1000s of add-ons for the most advanced users.
The goal of the original goal of Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox was to produce a lean, high performance Gecko-based browser as a companion of, and alternative to the Mozilla Suite. PhoeFiFo was built using Gecko and a "clean slate" approach, vs. other Mozilla variant browsers (like Galeon) that started with the Mozilla "Seamonkey" suite, and pared it down to meet size and performance goals. Sadly, the runaway popularity of what eventually became called Firefox has led to Firefox succumbing to the bloatware plague. Version 3 is a welcome step back towards PhoeFiFo's original goals. Because my personal workstations all have way more than enough RAM and HD capacity to accommodate all but the bloatiest of bloatware, my own personal concerns are about performance. I want a computer that has no noticeable lag whatsoever; that's my Holy Grail when it comes to personal computing. So when Firefox gets faster, I get happier. OTOH size does matter, because it does take a finite amount of time to move that object code from the disk and to the RAM, and to/from the CPU. Firefox as it is has lots of room for improvement. One obvious change that could improve the product is to dump the buggy GTK(2, + etc.) library dependencies, and keep the Firefox GUI as "lean and mean" as its Gecko rendering engine. I'm running KDE, why should I have to install major portions of GNOME in order to get Firefox running? That was the whole point of developing PhoeFiFo in the first place, after all. Let's have a Firefox that contains nothing but what it needs to render and navigate web pages, plug-in and add-on APIs, and just enough glue to have it work with the native windowing system. K.I.S.S.

pilate wrote:Mozilla prepares Firefox 2 to 3 auto-updateBy Justin Mann, TechSpot.com Published: August 22, 2008, 4:52 PM ESTOne of the primary reasons behind Firefox recently being cited as the most secure browser available was the high rate of people upgrading the browser. The in-built download-and-update function of Firefox certainly helped with that, but Mozilla has still not convinced all Firefox 2.x users to switch to Firefox 3. Many of them stay behind due to concerns about plugin compatibility, and perhaps many others simply don't know or don't want to be bothered. Mozilla wants to encourage those people to upgrade, feeling that enough time has passed for plugins to be updated and people to be assured that 3.0 is the future. Thus, they are getting ready to trigger an update of Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 using the upgrade feature built into the browser. The update is of course avoidable, but apparently it will continue to notify the person that 3.0 is ready to be installed. Mozilla's reasoning are numerous, but clearly supporting only a single branch of the browser will assist them in making sure that Firefox 3.0 remains a good browser. FF3 doesn't let you favorite things on ICHC.
