I could have been mistaken, but I believe I read an interview where McCartney (or Lennon, or George Martin) had mentioned something about that aspect of the song.  I think they referred to it as "country & western" though, not "bluegrass".

When I read your post, I thought yeah, this IS a bluegrass song...  your comment really describes it...  I am on the road like Jack Kerouac, but when I get home in a few days, I am gonna look in some of my texts for data about this song...  it will be interesting to see if any of the Beatles referred to this song as "country & western", because I think the "bluegrass" label is more accurate...

I would love to hear a good bluegrass cover of this song...

According to The Beatles Bible website, Lennon spoke about it in his 1980 interview with Playboy:

The thing was created in the studio. The lyrics are gobbledygook and Come Together was an expression that Leary had come up with when he was running for president. They'd asked me to write them a campaign song. I tried and tried and tried and couldn't come up with it. But I came up with this Come Together, which would have been no good for them. They couldn't have had a campaign song like that, right? But Leary attacked me years later, saying I ripped him off. Well, I had written another little thing called "Come together and join the party..." It never got further than that. And they never came back to ask for the song. I didn't rip him off. I had the song there waiting for him.
John Lennon · Playboy, 1980

However, when looking over one of the available transcripts of that interview, I could not find that particular quote.

Those are great quotes you have posted!

Here's that Asker dude... I had qualified this statement from the get-go when I said I went looking for a good footnote and found this instead... when I read this I remembered this history from other works like jagdriver described...

it really is amazing history, and it is also amazing how the music of the Beatles lives without any need for historical context— songs are as good right now as they ever were...

I was taught in college that the Beatles song "Come Together" is about the joys of simultaneous orgasms... I just looked for a good footnote, and I found this instead... fascinating history... I remember it like yesterday—

This song was written by John Lennon during his and Yoko's bed-in in Toronto in May 1969. It came about when their friend, Timothy Leary, the LSD drug mahatma and self-proclaimed liberator of the world's collective mind, slowed up at the bed-in. At this time, Leary had made a decision to run for political office, and came up with the campaign slogan of "Come Together." With this slogan in mind, he asked John to write him a song using it, that his followers could sing on the campaign trail. Lennon's take on the slogan was to come together and join the party, and wrote the song. Before Leary could use it, he was arrested and went to jail. As a result of Leary being gone, Lennon figured his obligation to him was no longer in force, thus he and The Beatles recorded it.

I do recall reading this in one of my MANY Beatles volumes, so it isn't just some 'Net fabrication..

I thought it was about the poor educational state of Liverpool.

1 and 1 and 1 is 3.

Or, it could be about how much they admire James Bond.

Got to be good looking, cause he's so hard to see.

Or, it could be about the state of the chiropractic arts

He got spinal cracker.
