~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is the MLK quote that I had on file—

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it... Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." —Martin Luther King, Jr.

but when I just tried to confirm the quote, I found this instead—

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. ... Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."  —Martin Luther King, Jr., from "Where Do We Go From Here?" as published in Where Do We Go from Here : Chaos or Community? (1967), p. 62

I give total credit to beamends and Lazy8 for pinning me to the mat about my Albert Einstein sort of almost misquote...  I am grateful that ScottFromWyoming came close to confirming my Einstein quote...  and it is good that Manbird caught your MLK misquote...  it helped me catch my MLK misquote that I had on file...

I am glad these folks have caught these misquotes... I have really learned something from it... you and I have made innocent misquotes, but the WWW is a dangerous place where psychopaths could deliberately use misquotes like machetes... just imagine somebody deliberately misquoting MLK as saying that cheese consumption causes hate... that could have a deleterious effect on the cheese markets...

my eyes are wide open on this subject now...

I was only one, and not that I understood it at the time {#Biggrin}, but I heard Eisenhower say this:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

and this:

"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present - and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite."

Not to nitpick as this is a nice sentiment, but only the last part is actually a quote by MLK.
The first sentence was added by a facebook user then copied and pasted so many times
on FB it became somehow incorporated into the quote.
