Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns
Like rum on the fire
Hot and fast and angry
As she can be
I walk my days on a wire.

It looks ugly, but it's clean,
Oh momma, don't fuss over me.

The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.

Calls of guilty fall on me
All while she stains
The sheets of some other
Thrown at me so powerfully
Just like she throws with the arm of her brother.

But I want it, it's a crime
That she's not around most of the time.

The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.

Her fight and fury is fiery
Oh but she loves
Like sleep the the freezing
Sweet and right and merciful
I'm all but washed
In the tide of her breathing.

And it's worth it, it's divine
And I can have this some of the time.

The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.

Trust me, this guy is a fucking genius.
I dunno...I think I'd take some Luka Bloom over this guy any day.  Similar vocals, but more energy.

I've never seen Patty as a diminuitive for Patrick - normally it's Paddy.

It's Hozier's  interpretation of how we were all Hozed by the Hozers in Public Health :-)
Most excellent to hear. Thank you William! How many years ago did William posit that this song was about...zombies?

Paddy's!
And seen that he was raised in a quaker family and possibly doesn't subscribe to Catholicism, I'd say not for that reason.

They usually name them Patrick.

The lyrics seem to describe quite an abusive relationship. "open hand or closed fist".
For a second I thought this was Chris Bathgate... Bill seems to have stopped playing his work.

Correction: Like sleep to the freezing
This song would segue perfectly into "Grantchester Meadows" by Pink Floyd

I think I found another - the book on the armchair maybe means sitting down and reading? Something to do while drinking cherry wine...
there is sweetness and poignance in his work {#Good-vibes}

You may be hozy, but he's Hozier.

Hey, please don't be so hard on street musicians. Even David Gilmour did some busking before his career took off with Pink Floyd.

That says more about the industry than this song.
First listen and look at the lyrics ...

Saw Hozier in concert this week, and his voice is even better in person - rich and warm.  The album is good, but I'm not a fan of the production choices on his vocals. Can't wait to see what he does next. A definite 9 on this one from me.

I agree, but it is somewhat offset by the jarring and intriguingly juxtaposed choir voices backing him on many of the tracks on the album - reminding of how central religion is within his music, often in a harsh and cynical light.

Sounds like Gary Lightbody which isn't a bad thing {#Cool}

This is the same guy that wants me to take him to church. Nice range of styles. And he's cute.

Yes, I can't stand that song. This is quite listenable, however.

Odd ratings - no 9's or 10's.  Don't see that often.

Well, there are presently only 28 ratings for this tune, but they now include one "10" and one "9".
he makes the little birds chirp along, isn't that special?  quite nice
Interesting lyrics...
