Oh, the streets are cracked and there's glass everywhere
And the children stare with a motherless eyes
In arms of beauty and on fields of war
Trapped in lament from the poet's core

Oh where
Oh where will I be?
Oh where
When that old trumpet sounds?

I met an Indian girl in Ottawa
She said, you'll be all right when you wah wah
Don't waste your breath, don't waste your heart
Don't blister your heels walking in the dark

Oh where
Oh where will I be?
Oh where
When that old trumpet sounds?

Yeah, I like the heat of your body laying under me
May your wild lip get you where you're going
With your inventions, your intentions, your laughter
Your forever yearning

Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?

Are you talking, filling the air, healing the scars
Gnawing away at the steel bars
Going down pure, crawling in the cracks
Going all the way down and coming all the way back

Oh where
Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?
Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?

Well, the heart opens wide like it's never seen love
And addiction stays on tight like a glove

Oh where
Oh where will I be?

More Lanois, his first 2 albums are killer!
So glad my homie Daniel from Gatineau (Hull), Quebec, is finally getting his due.
Great album and sound. His work on producing Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball album in 1995 was just fantastic.

I wonder if he owns a Thompson Gun.
Does anyone else think Daniel Lanois sounds like Nick Lowe?

Sorry - but as blasphemous as some will say it is, I like this SOOOOOO much better than Emmy's!!

Plus you can actually HEAR what he's saying!
It is hard to warm up to any song that you first heard by the great Emmy Lou Harris, but this really is quite good.
Oh, how I love Daniel's voice and dreamy style.....mmm.

I love both versions.  I think he either produced or wrote the original (or both) for her.  But I could be wrong- it happened once.

You could say that. He wrote, produced, played 3 different instruments, and sang backing vocals for Emmylou's version of this song!
Emmylou Harris did a spectacular version of this on Spyboy, which I think he also produced. It's a wonderful live album, one of my all-time favorites.
Bump. 7 > 8.
Sweet spot.
...and to clear up any further confusion: Hull does not exist anymore as it was subsumed by the city of Gatineau, which is where I now work. But Daniel grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, too
We've been listening to this CD for years. Guess that gives the age away. It's all good. Please play more of him.

7 > 8.
Nice. It blends in perfectly with the evening's creative endeavor.

I was thoroughly unprepared for how lovely that was.

Doesn't matter if to me. I own 'em all. Unusual & enigmatic artist. But thanks for knowing that.

Saw him three nights ago at the Barbican (in London) with Emmylou Harris, performing the whole of the Wrecking Ball album. Absolutely stonking performamce, including of course this song. He did a 45 min support set before Emmylou and that was great too.
Compelled to elevate my rating to 9. The sound is so distinctive and he manages to bring out aspects that are not present in the Emmylou Harris and Julie Miller versions. Quite excellent.
This is a good version, made after the Emmylou Harris production. Vocal reminds me a bit of Nick Lowe...

A transparent spirit floats around me and inflicts a positive energy into my fibers whenever I hear this wonderful song.
Thought this was Mark Knopfler at first.  Not so much after listening a little, but that was my first impression.

Miss you so much Cynaera...

love this song...

Lanois (I think it used to be spelled Lanolin) is a very interesting musical personage. A very versatile producer, composer and musician, he's worked with Brian and I think Roger Eno, U2, Dylan, and composed and produced one of the themes in Last of the Mohicans, and some music with Eno, entitled Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, for the fascinating moonshot documentary, For All Mankind. Yes, he is a true treasure - I have seen him perform twice and he's pure magic.<3

Holy shit. Was that a misfire of my stupid automatic spell check. I didn't intentionally write "Lanolin". I wrote Lanlois, because that was how I had seen it spelled several times, including on the back of one of my CDs.  Bad Word! Bad Bill Gates!

This is very smooth and melodic.  I love  the line about "I love the feel of your body under me."  MMMMMMMMMM
I have asked this question so often in my lifetime. A reflective time is always served when this song appears in the realm of my listening quarters. I really enjoy this song and it's atmosphere. Hopefully it leads to bigger and better things.

Nanana! b/s. Lanois is a Fench-Canadian name not a lubricant. I worked with him.

I wish to someday go from being able to appreciate Mr. Lanois' diverse and unique talents (as a solo artist) to being able to actually enjoy them.
A great talent, vastly underappreciated!

Daniel Lanois' production on Harris' Wrecking Ball album was so powerful that it was as much his album as hers.  I like his first version - the one with her singing - better.

This version and the Emmylou version have slightly different lyrics. Either way, it was written by Mr. Lanois

Thought I heard a bit of Dylan in his voice - pleasant surprise to find out it DL - it's been since 89 since acadie ? Goodness I must be getting old...when someone has made such a vast catalogue of such amazing material be it production of some of the most seminal music of (at least MY but dare I say OUR lives) it's hard not to feel we are just lucky to chill in his enormous shadow...

Not a great voice, but jeez I get lost in his production. Totally pristine and immersive without being excessive.

I love his voice, but it's his production that identifies his songs for me.  Can't explain it, beyond the fact that his songs have a feel... oh, and the stereo drums...

 BillG wrote:

Actually, he did.

He also produced Apollo, which I can hear a bit here in this song.

I wish I heard that album here.  {#Arghhh}

Love me some Daniel Lanois.
Wow,from some of the comments it looks like this guy has had some influence on me without me ever knowing it.

Always a pleasure to listen to Daniel.
From "What have I done!?!" to "Where will I be?"  Awesome Bill.
Daniel Lanois is THE man, period.
Emmylou ... that's who sang it before.  I was having trouble listening to this because I was trying to figure that out <sigh>.  Nice rendition, though.
Magnificent! A SOLID TEN

He DID?!!?!? I suspected so 'cause it sounded so much like his style, i quickly glanced at the back cover of the vinyl album i've had since '88 (reminds me of prom night) and didn't see his name... not surprised i missed it... i'll look again. Thanks Bill
Well done, scrubbrush! We could all use a little more Lanois in our lives.

This reminds me of another song sung by a female on RP. But I can't remember who that is.

I really like this.

Of course, Daniel Lanois is The Man:

"Daniel Lanois (pronounced /lænˈwɑː/, lan-wah)<1> (born September 19, 1951 in Hull, Quebec) is a Canadian record producer, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He has released a number of albums of his own work and has produced albums for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson. Lanois is best known for producing, with Brian Eno, a number of albums for U2, including The Joshua Tree."

Nice to hear from this gifted producer and sometimes NOLA resident. Thanks!
Wow, assuming this is representative of him solo, you can totally hear Lanois's paw-prints all over the albums he produced for Peter Gabriel!

What it is now...
Dare I say this must be yet another Other Mark Knopfler.
But I do like it.  Calm and comforting.
