And the children stare with a motherless eyes
In arms of beauty and on fields of war
Trapped in lament from the poet's core
Oh where
Oh where will I be?
Oh where
When that old trumpet sounds?
I met an Indian girl in Ottawa
She said, you'll be all right when you wah wah
Don't waste your breath, don't waste your heart
Don't blister your heels walking in the dark
Oh where
Oh where will I be?
Oh where
When that old trumpet sounds?
Yeah, I like the heat of your body laying under me
May your wild lip get you where you're going
With your inventions, your intentions, your laughter
Your forever yearning
Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?
Are you talking, filling the air, healing the scars
Gnawing away at the steel bars
Going down pure, crawling in the cracks
Going all the way down and coming all the way back
Oh where
Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?
Oh where
Oh where
When that trumpet sounds?
Well, the heart opens wide like it's never seen love
And addiction stays on tight like a glove
Oh where
Oh where will I be?
...and his middle name is Roland.
I wonder if he owns a Thompson Gun.
Daniel Lanois is a Franco-Ontarian boy from the Ottawa Valley who has done well for himself. He was born in Hull, Québec which sits across la rivière des Outaouais from the federal capital of Canada: Ottawa, Ontario.
Just to clear up any confusion.

Plus you can actually HEAR what he's saying!
I love both versions. I think he either produced or wrote the original (or both) for her. But I could be wrong- it happened once.
You could say that. He wrote, produced, played 3 different instruments, and sang backing vocals for Emmylou's version of this song!
Sweet spot.

Nice. It blends in perfectly with the evening's creative endeavor.
More Daniel Lanois please.
Doesn't matter if to me. I own 'em all. Unusual & enigmatic artist. But thanks for knowing that.

Yes, he is a true treasure - I have seen him perform twice and he's pure magic.<3
Hilarious.
Wistful.
Holy shit. Was that a misfire of my stupid automatic spell check. I didn't intentionally write "Lanolin". I wrote Lanlois, because that was how I had seen it spelled several times, including on the back of one of my CDs. Bad Word! Bad Bill Gates!
<Lanois (I think it used to be spelled Lanolin) is a very interesting musical personage. A very versatile producer, composer and musician, he's worked with Brian and I think Roger Eno, U2, Dylan, and composed and produced one of the themes in Last of the Mohicans, and some music with Eno, entitled Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, for the fascinating moonshot documentary, For All Mankind. I thought this sounded a little tedious coming from the likes of the brilliant Danny...
she does indeed.
It looks like they're still out of MP3's. Maybe the truck shipping them was hijacked.
Hijacked... Hmmm... hijacked by pirates?
What, did they run out of MP3's?

How can you listen to this and not think of the Emmylou Harris version?
Daniel Lanois' production on Harris' Wrecking Ball album was so powerful that it was as much his album as hers. I like his first version - the one with her singing - better.
This version and the Emmylou version have slightly different lyrics. Either way, it was written by Mr. Lanois
I love his voice, but it's his production that identifies his songs for me. Can't explain it, beyond the fact that his songs have a feel... oh, and the stereo drums...
Actually, he did.
He also produced Apollo, which I can hear a bit here in this song.
I wish I heard that album here.
" I didn't get a harrumph out of that guy."
What, did they run out of MP3's?
Mr. Stills?....... Hello....Is that you?
Mr. Stills?....... Hello....Is that you?
Actually, he did.
He DID?!!?!? I suspected so 'cause it sounded so much like his style, i quickly glanced at the back cover of the vinyl album i've had since '88 (reminds me of prom night) and didn't see his name... not surprised i missed it... i'll look again. Thanks Bill

I really like this.
Of course, Daniel Lanois is The Man:
"Daniel Lanois (pronounced /lænËwÉË/, lan-wah)<1> (born September 19, 1951 in Hull, Quebec) is a Canadian record producer, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He has released a number of albums of his own work and has produced albums for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson. Lanois is best known for producing, with Brian Eno, a number of albums for U2, including The Joshua Tree."

Dare I say this must be yet another Other Mark Knopfler.
But I do like it. Calm and comforting.
