Tonight
Where do we go from here?
The road through Ruby Falls has reached the end
And now we're digging in the sand
They're promising that help is on the way

Love, confession number one
Impossible and sorry
And judge, can you look the other way?
Some things are best unsaid

And now where can we go from here
When all the morning birds have gone away
Two wrongs won't navigate tonight
The afterlife is all in the end
The afterlife is ours in the end

Love, don't look me in the eye
Just wash it all down
And judge, can you let me run away
We're outta here, straight outta here

Somewhere down buried in the sand
Two birds give out a song
And all of Ruby Falls is singin' along

Sing along...

(...gone and turned away (?))
(...gonna make you pay (?))

Ever have totally unhinged, amazing sex? If so, do you just jump into the next agenda of your day? No....you lay there and calm down, breathe deeply and relish the moment of calm. This ending is the soundtrack for that time. If you have no idea what I'm talking about...then I have some due sympathy for you. Long story short...just try and imagine it.

I agree - the song has a dramatic,  rapturous climax that ends in spasms, flailing and finally collapsing into itself.
I was thinking of giving this a 9 but.. no. It's a 10.

They took a good idea and polished it into perfection

Not sure what this song was written for but I relate due to being sued frivolously for several years.
Whoa

Solid 10
So good for my ears.
Love the trumpet in the coda.
Great Song. Great Album.
The guitar solo would have been better (easy!), I would have given this incredible tune a 9. Stays at 8 for me.

wow. you nailed it for me.

i get so emotional with this one. it's lovely.
First heard this song here on RP back in 2008ish. Its timeless and amazing and yet ive not heard it anywhere else!

yes, it does ring that in the one place, too. but somehow, i think this is more accessible for many listeners. so much hatred for radiohead. i actually love that song, and this one - but i immediately thought of your reference, too.
fantastic

I think this came out soon after I started listening to RP. I remember it distinctly as  a 'Why haven't I heard this any where else?' . And, yes, my CD collection is much richer thanks to William.
...we hope....that you choke...that you choke...
Very Miles-esque trumpet solo at the end of this song,  I like it
That's a fantastic song.  Thanks RP!

This song helped me process my father-inlaw moving on to the other side before we were ready. That wailing guitar, I wailed right along with it.
Nice. Another one I would not know about if it weren't for RP. Thanks
this album is a complete and wholly goddamned beautiful golden jem!

Cranking the volume on my Mac as well. 15 years in now.
This one always bring tears to my eyes... Some of the most densely-packed tragic heartbreak novels' worth of feelings cleverly and melodiously jammed into one of the most jamming songs EVER!
Fun fact: Sing the "aaaah aahhh aaaaah" bit (at aound the 3:30 mark) along in the presence of  babies, and they WILL cry. Something in the tonality makes them so instantly sad somehow. Tried it on both my daughters, 5 years apart, and never failed. Could be my singing, though :-) But seriously try it.
Glorious. 9

Hadn't thought through the end, other than to enjoy the muted trumpet solo that came out of nowhere, but your analogy for the end works really, really well. Especially "two birds give out a song and all of Ruby Falls is singin' along". I've been there and it takes a bit of breathing before normalcy resumes.

Good call!
The best thing to come out of Boston since....... ever!
Top 10 RP song of all time.
Tom Waits to Little Richard to Guster is exactly why I am a devotee of RP.

Same here.  RP is the only venue I visit these days.  A wonderful experience every day.

ps I hope you got some kip...
7 ---> 8

This is hitting all my YES buttons today.
Absolutely amazing song, with a live melody with a soul with epic bassline, everything works here. Very emotional song. 10/10

13 years later and it still sounds as majestic as when it was first played on RP. It's so good.
I absolutely adore the distorted guitar in this song. Provides a beautiful dynamic for the more subdued sections of the song.

Perhaps Neil Rosengarden on the muted trumpet. Props!

(I had to dig deep for that, at work of course)
The more I here this, the more I like it.

with a depth in sound like this one. I find their works rather shallow
compared to Ruby Falls (which by the way was the first Guster track I
ever listened to and I absolutely deeply love it). Even more this one
deserves a 9 from me. One of my all time favorites from start to finish.

Yeah, I don't get this one either.  I think Ruby Falls is a great tune.  Maybe even a representative one for the band.  But they've done plenty of other stuff that is just as good or better.  Look no further than the title track of their latest CD.
There are many, many Guster songs I love, but this takes the cake
Masterpiece. Probably their finest tune, from their finest album.
Well I had a dream. Me & my fella's were going to try something new. So after long deliberation we decided to Gang Up On The Sun...Bad Idea....Way too HOT.

This production gets a 10 from moi.
Hell of a song.  Powerful.
absolutely the joy of rock and roll here.

Sometimes you know exactly where you are going.
Sometimes, it's ok when you do not.
An epic adventure, as my friend would have said.
This is beautiful, but then, I'm a sucker for a great chord change...
Heard this song here four years ago for the first time, loved it then, and love it more now. A truly unique gem.
Yes, the brass is good.  THe lyrics too.  I never heard of this band but I will look them up now.  THank you RP.  THis is really a great station, my friend was not kidding me because I thought I knew the best that was out there (from satellite), but I see now I was wrong. Happy to know you now {#Smile}
This drives me crazy - hate the high squeal tone in the middle!

What an amazing song this is!

Love the muted trumpet!
love it

I can imagine playing this at the point of the date when i want to slow the night down a little; it might accompany the statement "let me make you another drink, darling "

I like longer songs, or pieces really, and wasn't surprised to hear BillG pair this beautifully with the splendid TWOD piece "Thinking of a place "
And it does feel so very real.
Awesome  segue as usual!

I may be one of the very few RP listeners who actually has had enough of this song.  Along with a few other songs, I downloaded this to my ipod about ten years ago to hear while I work out.  I have been listening to it ever since...because I am too lazy to update my tracks.  I can't even remember how I felt about this song when I first downloaded it.  I must have liked it enough to download it in the first place I guess.

Phenomenal Live band- seen on a couple of occasions years ago when my daughter was too young to drive herself to concerts.  Love their passion and humor.  And the relationship they have with their audience- intimate, no matter the setting.
I find myself whistling along to this one. Its great!

Like Guster quite a bit.  This reminds me of Pink Floyd.

Same here. I always have to stop and listen, They played it live here in Raleigh - it was amazing.

It's amazing how well this band blends soundscapes more typical of The Beach Boys, The Shins, and even Pink Floyd into stunning magical masterpiece, DIG IT
A few folks have commented on the lyrics. To me, they seem like word salad. If you think you see a deep meaning, you may be right, or perhaps it's an aural rorschach?

But who cares. That melody! Those harmonies! It's a lovely tune.

sweet, real and far out

Artful.
Oh, those harmonies near the end.
Echoes of Jah Wobble at the end with the muted trumpet over the twinkling vamp.
Guster is a great band. One of the best concerts I've been to last year for their Evermotion tour.

Yep... and hearing them play this live in concert (Northampton, MA) last October brought tears to my eyes. Their harmonies are spot on, and this song is emotionally evocative to the extreme.

Commercial radio died a long time ago. Here is what it used to be like:  https://floydslips.blogspot.com/2009/07/freeform-radio-masterdave-dixon-on-wabx.html.

Always turn this one up!
The muted trumpet just took a 7 to 9.
instant classic for me.
I just can't believe how much I like this song...
Oversaturated with precious details.
Some of those gorgeous chord changes just pull me across the room...
Or a sax?
Like the surprise ending!  Is that a trumpet ?
I can't put my finger on exactly why I like this, but I do. Maybe because I live in Georgia where you'll fine barn roofs painted with "See Ruby Falls" in large white letters.
That overdriven jazz fueled muted trumpet outro... Just wow!
I've been enjoying this cd a lot. Although it's hard to match the accomplishment of this song, most all the songs have grown on me and the cd is lasting very well.
Pretty goddamned epic if you ask me
Recently saw them in London. Being from the uk never heard of them before rp.

After the london show I'll make sure to see them if they ever come back. Great live show.
Lyrically, musically, theatrically, WOW, it just doesn't get much better than this, and I am happy to hear it, here on RP, and THANKS!
I always expect to hear the first chord of the song "C'mon" after this fades out.  I'm surprised that track isn't on RP.  "C'mon!"

I have some really cool memories of seeing these guys live.  I don't usually do this kind of thing, but for some reason I can recall three separate Guster shows where I had snuck somewhere I shouldn't have been and ended up having an awesome time.  One time I saw them with some friends at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley, CA.  The upper mezzanine floor was closed and it was just general admission on the ground floor.  When the band before Guster finished their set, we went out into the foyer to check out the merch and stuff, and I snooped around and found the way up to the upper floor — and it was unlocked!  We waited for our moment and all sprinted through the door as quickly as we could, shutting it behind us.  When we got up there it was completely empty, we had the whole balcony to ourselves and never got caught.  We sat front and center and smoked joints and rocked out the whole show.
