Walking on Velvet Green
Scotch pine growing
Isn't it rare to be taking the air?
Singing
Walking on Velvet Green

Walking on Velvet Green
Distant cows lowing
Never a care
With your legs in the air
Loving
Walking on Velvet Green

Won't you have my company
Yes, take it in your hands
Go down on Velvet Green with a country man
Who's a young girl's fancy and an old maid's dream
Tell your mother that you walked all night on Velvet Green

One dusky half-hour's ride up to the north
There lies your reputation and all that you're worth
Where the scent of wild roses turns the milk to cream
Tell your mother that you walked all night on Velvet Green

And the long grass blows in the evening cool
And August's rare delights may be April's fool
But think not of that my love
I'm tight against the seam
And I'm growing up to meet you down on Velvet Green

Now let me tell you that it's love and not just lust
And if we live the lie let's lie in trust
On golden daffodils to catch the silver stream
That washes out the wild oat seed on Velvet Green

We'll dream as lovers under the stars
But civilization's raging afar
And the ragged dawn breaks on your battle scars
As you walk home cold and alone upon Velvet Green

(Repeat first two verses)

Read the lyrics. Very risqué.
I remember seeing a video of concert footage, just before this record came out, with Anderson introducing this song as one of the most challenging to play.  I would have to agree - this one certainly has a technical side to it.  One of the best JT albums.
Great track from one of their best albums... 9!

This song is soooo good for the ears...

Hey Bill>  9 Years since last play?!!!
Went to see Tull just after this came out, never one of their best albums but still enjoyable and a great live band esp. in smaller venues like Hammersmith Odean.

Damn! Missed it! Very much like the whole Songs from the Wood album—Tull's last really good one, I think. Must make a note to buy it on CD—think my vinyl is long lost. . . .

And I never got around to doing that, either.  But did just buy it and download it tonight.

I still like it!

Lots of glowing reviews, I'm with you folks. Wish we could here it more than once every 3 years.
great song, one of his best (i don't like calling jethro tull a band because mostly Ian is doing all the work)
I really love the 'Tull' sound.
Whoo-hoo! Ian's getting his leggings in a froth! This is what being English is all about!
Just upped it from 8 to 9
This makes me want to dress up in medival clothing and prance through the forest with my pony. ...haven't done that in a while....
It's SO great to hear this song! Talk about talent! Ian Anderson is just amazing. Songs From the Wood is a fantastic album. Thank you Radio Paradise!
Hah! Take that, you young whippersnapper! Payback for all the noise I have to listen to at intersections.drH wrote:

YAY! haven't heard this song in forever because I never take the CD out. quirky and well-put-together. huzzah!

Now that there is a little historical perspective, I think you have to give JT a lot of respect for being a true original. I remeber seeing them in LA a hundred years ago (well maybe 25). Ian Anderson was a great showman. I think their music really holds up over time. /searches record collection for more JT to play
I never get tired of hearing this song--it transports me to another time and place.
Excellent.... will have to dust off the old album and listen to it again. Forgot I had it until I heard this song.
Never heard this song, but it is excellent! It deserves a 9. Among the best of the Jethro Tull, I think!
Haven't heard this in years! Thanks RP!
Bloody hell. Now we're talking. Cheeky song to start the morning.
NEVER thought I'd hear this song on the radio. Any radio. RP never ceases to amaze me. Paradise indeed!
