when I hear this, I think of the dinner scene in Beetlejuice. it's a great song
My 2nd ever "godlike" on RP
This is one of those timeless hits. I first heard it on the radio when I was about 5 or 6, and that was nearly 70 years ago! It is still one that makes me sit up and listen.
Thank you Harry & RP.

This was always on when I was a child, and most of my adult life it was just that weird song about "something with bananas". Then one day I tripped over the lyrics and researched the meaning, and since then the song sends chills down my spine.

My parents played this album on their Grundig Stereo HiFi Cabinet in the 60's. It appealed to me then, and still does. The man could sing!!
Haha, I always thought he was singing "Come, Mr. Taliban"!
Dayyyooo!!!
Always reminds me of his skit with this on The Muppet Show - awesome!
impossible not to play this loud. 10.
Stan Freberg has an interesting take on this song!
Fifty years from now this song will still be getting airplay somewhere. It lives on forever.

Harry Belafonte is an American classic. A great song from my younger days.

Absolutely no redeeming qualities.
This was on all our parents' record shelves, and still on the radio when I was a kid in the '60s. The teachers all had "a thing" for Harry B
One of the early artists and songs that introduced the listening public to Caribbean/latin music. An 8 then and still holding strong.
Hey, Mr. Taliban
I always think of Ray Davies singing, "Dayo!!" during the live version of "All Day and All of the Night" on the Kinks 1980 live release, "One from the Road".
My Dad used to sing this song to me before bed every night. Harry was one of his favorite artists to cover for me and my sister.
This guy would be included in my desert island collection. So good!

I heard Harry B.'s Day-O throughout my childhood as my parents where fans.
Then I discovered the ultimate gem, the live at Carnegie Hall. Superior showmanship, class A entertainer and fantastic band and orchestra... highly recommended! ...and you realise how big he was back then.
I had the vacuum cleaner on when this started playing, I could swear it was Gotyes Hearts a mess

Best performer that I've ever seen in concert!!!!--Harry has amazing stage juju!...a real rare gem here on Planet Earth...
Oh my, what an odd song this is, going right back to my childhood. For some reason, being British, I put this in the same head space as 'The goons', which is entirely wrong of course.
My first and favorite memory of the Banana Boat Song is Harry singing it on the Flip Wilson Show.
I used to watch that show with my Dad, good times...
My parents loved Harry Belafonte and played this song frequently. Fond memories of me and my brother dancing around with my Dad's bongos and castanets!
Yes mon.
Wonderful from an American icon.
If you ever feel like making a banana theme set including this song, you should also include this one: Tally Hall - Banana Man. :)

Surprising to hear, but that's also what I love about RP. Variety across generations. Even if, like others, all I can think of is Beetlejuice.

This is a really quite a beautiful song, but often pariodied...sad really when you think about its origins.
I had to bump this from 8 to 10 because of the events of the last half hour. My brother and I were arguing about recycling, and he tried to stomp off in a rage, and then this song came on. I yelled at him to come back, I turned this song up, and all those layers of hostility and defensiveness just dropped away.
Any song that can de-fuse a potential war is a 10 in my book. God love ya, Mr. Belafonte.

The Day-Oh part gets a 1 because it reminds me of the gawd damn fuckin' 'Yankees. The rest of the song makes up for it 8

Should have been the opening tune for Dr. No - considering things as they developed in the movie ;-)

Iconic and timeless
La, la, la, la, Lo - la ...
HB and the Muppets!
And now, Beetlejuice aside, Harry Belafonte is an icon for me. My parents tolerated his music, but it wasn't until years after I was out of the house that I could appreciate his body of work. Thank you, RP - for playing this song, and for helping me remember why I love music so much.
