High tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going
Don't let them get you down
Making you feel guilty about
golden rain, will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve and now
Climbing, forever trying
Find your way out of the wild, wild wood
Now there's no justice
Only yourself that you can trust in
And I said high tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going
Day by day your world fades away
Waiting to feel all the dreams that say
Golden rain will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve now
And I say, climbing, forever trying
find you way out of the wild, wild wood
Said you are gonna find you way out of the wild, wild wood
Wild wild wood.

Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going
Don't let them get you down
Making you feel guilty about

This whole album was under rated in the US. “Hung up” was a great track too.

A big one!
Welcome after the depression of other stuffs (U2 One Death Cab for Cutie I Dreamt We Spoke Again).
Lucky enough to see The Jam 6 times and to see how that angry young man has matured to produce this is astonishing.
Stunning live act and The Jam were the soundtrack to my miss spent teans.
Wow.
I haven't heard this in a while.
Refreshing!

I've seen him live a few times. Simply fabulous. And he's always done this song proud.
This whole album is outstanding. The Modfather is one of music's most prolific and underrated geniuses.

I thought the voice sounded a bit like (older, recent) Clapton.
Would love to hear Sunflower from same album.

The Jam's songs were particularly British, most people in the US didn't understand them. While he was in the Style Council and now that he is a solo artist Mr. Weller himself has admitted that he had no desire to do the touring it would require to be big in the US. Simply put he didn't like the idea of being on the road for half a year or more even when he was younger. See him anytime you have the opportunity, he definitely is great.
Why was Paul Weller not a BIG DEAL in the US? Irish & British friends in OZ turned me on to him, and he is great. Shame he does not get the praise that he deserves here in the States.

Caught the tail end of this and wondered if this was an old Chicago tune I had missed or forgotten. The voice.

Bill, I'm meant to be concentrating............ The Cult, She sells Sanctuary, then The Modfather Wild Wood. I can't pretend to be doing anything except listening when I'm jigging at my desk..
Great set this afternoon, brightening a dull UK day!!

He kicked ass.
After a handful of songs it was almost time to stop and he was frustrated, "We're just getting warmed up!" Did two Jam songs, as well.

Coming to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this year. Unexpected and now I'm all excited.

Oh yes, the Portishead remix would be fantastic.
I once had a promo pressing of it, acquired stapled to an issue of Melody Maker ... or was it the NME? Anyway, long since lost

Thanks for posting that photo of Strummer & Weller (which has since "vanished").
We always had heard there was a big rivalry and some bad blood between The Clash & The Jam (including the 'Burton Suits' lyric in "White Man in Hammersmith Palais"), but it's nice to see the boys let it go after the smoke cleared.

You would probably really like his newest "Wake Up The Nation". Weller was with The Jam and then Style Council before his solo work. He's one of my Top 5 favorite artists, period. He's one of the few who have evolved musically without losing their 'edge' and yet more technically proficient and lyrically current. Most interesting is the change of style within an album of songs yet they all seem to fit together nicely but with such different range.
i'm with you.
loved the jam.
loved style council (mostly picadilly circle).
amazing talent.

A true masterpiece! Probabaly his best solo effort to date (IMHO).

Personally, I mostly can't understand most of RP's song themes. Whatever connection there is between songs mostly escapes me. But presumably the connection between this song and the previous Pearl Jam song is the timber of Paul and Eddie's voices. am i right or way off base (as is likely)

It's nuts how music transports you to a different moment in life in just a few notes - I've gone from the cult on my school bus to my grandad's funeral via paul weller.
It's why I don't have a telly. Telly doesn't take you anywhere like music does.

In 1993 I'd more or less given up on Weller, after loving The Jam but losing interest in the Style Council. And then a radio station played this track. It was a smoky voiced, maturer Weller who'd turned around and made perhaps the best record of his career.

Agreed. This is such a different style from his other work. But then again, he has always successfully explored different styles of music.
Does this guy ever make bad music? Whether's it's new mod rockers, pop dance or even when he's channeling 70s Blind Faith era Steve Winwood (like here), it all sounds fresh..and awesome!

This is an awesome song . . . I apparently have some kind of a remixed version, cause the bass is thumping in mine. In this one I can hear the vocals better. . . gotta get this cd.
