Had a good-lookin' mama who never was around
But she grew up tall, and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights
Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, was more than they'd seen
I was introduced, and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin' on, keep movin' on"
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again
Well, I don't know, but I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwin' up, tired of going down
Tired of myself, tired of this town
Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again
There's pigeons down on Market Square
She's standin' in her underwear
Lookin' down from a hotel room
Nightfall will be comin' soon
Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
You got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit my last number and walked to the road
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again
That aside ... simply awesome raw energy and incredible harmonics. Nobody can say no to that presentation. (The video was absolutely mistake).
And I like just about any of his hits (plus others that aren't such big hits).
This one is just ... meh.
Also, this reminds me of when I interned on Capitol Hill in DC. I was walking with one of the staffers to the House of Reps and he was telling me about organizing a letter-writing campaign demanding MTV pull the video for this song because it glorified necrophilia. My response was "But that song rocks!" Then I flashed a devil sign at him and punched him in the shorts. Well, maybe not the last part there.
You should have made his head explode and told him the truth that it is a farewell to marijuana.
First time that I have heard this in FLAC! ...With high quality headphones, amp & DAC! ...WOW!
Once again, WOW!
Only 7 to me ...
10.0 to me - the best TP song ever.
It is a matter of taste
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long . . .
Miss ya, Tom!
Finally got to see TP in London Hyde Park on the last tour. Stevie Nicks as support and joining in on Stop dragging... and my son on my shoulders. Good memories and sadly missed.
A) this song will always remind me of MTV; this song came out when I watched HOURS of their Music Videos (back when they did that) each day, and was the first Petty song I knew.
B) Having only heard this on MTV and FM Radio, and maybe once or twice over the years on RP, now that I'm hearing it in FLAC, WOW....that intro has some cool guitar sounds I've never noticed before. KUDOS to BillG for offering the FLAC files to us Android (and iphone) app users; it's very much appreciated!
PS - huh, I can't believe I never bought any Petty albums. I might have to change that here soon.
As part of the generation that grew up with MP3s and desktop PC speakers, I, too, am amazed at how different a song like this sounds with a FLAC stream and Bose headphones. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but I can see why one would aspire.
For all you podcast listeners out there, check out the latest episode of Broken Record. It's an interview with Rick Rubin about the recording of Wildflowers and this song.
Cheers
Oh, come on folks; you can't be that naive...
Wow, first time hearing this track both A) since Tom's too-soon departure and B) as a FLAC file.

I can't believe I never gave Tom Petty the respect he deserved. He was never on my playlist and for that I should be smacked upside the head. I'm sorry it took me until he died before I really listened. A great talent sadly gone.

Petty give up weed ?
Right.
Funny how things change in three years.
Petty still can't sing, and I loathe this song.
A friend lent me Tom's autobiographical DVD Runnin Down A Dream, which got me into stuff of his which was not necessarily what made it onto the radio. Some great stuff there. And in the DVD Petty did a nice job of explaining where he thought he fit into rock history without sounding arrogant.
And Mojo was one of the best albums of 2010, IMHO.
Call me converted.
folks why it was Tom not Neil that George went after for the Willburys? ( hint, he wanted talent)
Why George should ask Neil Diamond?
So Petty is a talent - aha!

Thank youTom. I mentioned the same comment on the Jayhawk's song.
I like Breakdown even better. But this gets a solid 8 from me.
I don't think either of them (or just about any popular recording artists of the 20th Century) will even be remotely thought of one hundred years from now. If you asked ten people under 25 to name a tune by either of those artists, you probably wouldn't get very many responses - so it's even more unlikely that their great-grandchildren will think of either artist very much either. Personally, I prefer Neil Young's work to Tom Petty's as well, but it's all primarily, fleeting, pop music. Aesthetics are generally not dictated by some hypothesis or analysis of what may be remembered one hundred years hence.
True enough. But to reinforce your sentiment the likes of Mozart and Beethoven will be remember for as long as music remains a facet of humanity (at its best).
This is not taking anything away from the likes of Tom P. or Neil Y. as I like 'em for the music they've created. Only to say that while one is pop music self-referencing within the time and culture that created it, the other is.....Art that surpasses time and culture. It's like the cave paintings in France....it expresses and touches something basic in every human being..
So it goes.

Ha ha! I have comment envy. . . this is the one liner comment of the year for me.
a. Tom Petty can't sing. To be fair, Neil can't either.
2. Neither Tom nor Neil is a great technical guitar player, but Neil can (and has) gotten more out of one note than Tom could, if he did a solo —- doesn't he normally hand the solos off to Mike Campbell?
iii. In the end analysis, Tom makes pop songs, a few of which are ok. Neil makes art.
Ask yourself who is going to be remembered in a hundred years.

One of my ALL TIME favorite songs. Don't know why! I just LOVE it.
Art conquers all taboos. 8
OK, I'll bite ... who is the fifth one? George Martin?
Since I'm here, I'll take the opportunity to reiterate how much I hate this fargin song.
Wish we were laying there - without!
I agree with you completely!
Kim Basinger in the video
. . . she never looked better than in this video!
but.....is it wrong for a guy and a corpse...?
Kim Basinger in the video
both, definitely. Just because you like Neil better doesn't make him more history friendly.
ha....that was funny.
Oh my my, oh hell yes.
