Truly a beautiful song both musically and lyrically. Just as with every song, some will like, some will not. Try and leave the bigoted BS out!
Very well stated! I Agree!
Whether one lives or has lived in Israel is not the question. A month isn't long, but that's how long I was there a few years ago traveling on our own with friends. Everytime politics rears up, I wince. If downing a musician because of their country's politics flourishes here at RP, we will become mired in a bottomless pit of controversy. Though politics and music have gone hand & hand, e.g. Marley, Dylan, Gutherie, etc, where music is the medium for the message & you can choose to listen or not, this is not the same. Here you have judgement based on the singer's place of birth and someone's viewpoint of that countries politics & abuses. If you start censoring countries that are abusive, start with America. What countries should be scratch cause they don't fit someone's socio-political agenda? Spare the judgement, and clean up your own backyard. Let's just groove to the RP tunes.
drivel
Your comment: I agree.
Please keep RP free of politics.
Thank you.
everything is political - just look at what "no politics talk" has got us to (in the USA.) yeah!
Boycott the USA and its products?
Both. Boycott both. Boycott all the colonizers.
boycott Israel and it's products
Boycott the USA and its products?
What are those horrible sounds coming from this person?
Gave it an 8 just to piss you off
How is this a 6 average rating.? I'm wondering why anyone who doesn't like this is even listening to the world mix. Amazing tune.
It's also played on the main mix. Not that I think that makes it any more understandable.
This is not a political forum. I think many here find this commentary unwelcome.
And yes ... music is outside or topless than politic
Please educate yourself. This artist crosses ethnic, religious and political boundaries to create world music with multiple influences, especially Arab and Africa. Condemning him comes across as you being the one who has the racist problem, not him.
Oh yes
Wow...racist much?
the song sucks either way
not being political.....just honest
2. This song is by Idan Raichel and not the State of Israel, so shut up already
3. All this talk about throat sounds is pretty ignorant if you ask me. I used to do the same with German, until I actually met German people!
Thanks for playing it!
It's all scraps of life

No, sorry, playing music by someone who is a proud racist (or a child rapist) is no good.
Idan Racihel is such a person.
Exactly. Well put.
I understand your stance, but this radio is about good music from all over the world and not politics.
Xenophobia at its finest.
Thank you.
"Craps of Life"
Thank you Djoy .... i couldn't have said it any better myself. And of course thank you too RP!
+1
Knowing the background of this, only just having read about it, I cannot 'like' it, or condone its playing.
Scraps of life indeed, when you see how the apartheid regime, for lack of a better term, affects people in the region.
No, sorry, playing music by someone who is a proud racist (or a child rapist) is no good.
Idan Racihel is such a person.
He may defend sodomy and other methods of torture; he may object to conscientious objectors, but I still want to hear his music.
An economic boycott of Israeli goods manufactured in the West Bank and Jerusalem strikes me as good campaign tactic. Boycotting Israeli artists, writers and intellectuals does not strike me as a helpful tactic.

But, every time i hear song in Hebrew i am little bit happy, jest same childish "this is ours"
But then .. there is Apartheid here...
But Idan ... He just a singer ...
But he didn't do anything public to stop the Apartheid ...
But he is just a singer - try to make a living from singing... if he go to public politic , he will be banned in israel...
But there Apartheid ... and it is a disgrace for all of us
PLEASE HELP US TO PUSH ISRAEL TO STOP THE TERRIBLE APARTHEID !
Nice touch. jp, I admire your strong partisan support for the Israeli nation building-ethnic cleansing process.
Apartheid works as a metaphor to a degree.
Many activists have compared the Israeli ethnic cleansing project to the treatment of Aboriginals in North America. That is stretched as clearly natives in both the USA and Canada enjoy full rights compared to either Israeli Arabs or Palestinians in the Occupied territories.
The annoying similarity is the discourse of cultural superiority that comes tripping off the tongues of Israelis, in particular settlers. It is very similar in spirit to the discourse of cultural superiority with regards to natives that one hears commonly in many parts of North America.
The other day I did a back of the envelope calculation of the number of Americans that died directly and indirectly as a result of the Israeli ethnic cleansing project. The number came in a little under 30,000. Since the early 1970s.
That is a small number of American citizen deaths compared to the number that kill their fellow Americans on an annual basis with guns.
Then there is all that political capital spent to defend Israel's regional nuclear weapons monopoly. Then there is the fact that a greater and more glorious Israel has iconic status among national liberation groups throughout the world. It is after all the last western power that is killing and taking.
When Americans travel the world with a big bullseye painted on their backs, it is in large part because of the multi-billion dollar support (mostly weapon systems) for the Israeli ethnic cleansing project. There is the poetic justice, because when it comes to killing grandchildren and grandparents, over the past 70 years, the USA has figured among the best, most proficient killers of civilians.
The point is that you are willing to sacrifice your own security, your own economic opportunities and to endure the hate of a big chunk of the world for this nuclear weapons backed affirmative action ethnic cleansing project. For that I admire you.
Sounds about right.
aparthied? I smell a false flag or ... no make that AND an idiot.
The only place in the middle east with true religious freedom, and rights to vote for all religions is Israel. Now, the criminals running the "(un)Occupied Territiories" on the other hand. Shoot at your enemy while hiding behind the women and children. Use then to do the dangerous work digging tunnels for terror attacks, and blame everyone else for the deaths. low life pigs is all they really are.

Yes, the phlegm throws me off.
I did live there for a long time. I know the situation very well. I think it is relevant to discuss whether this artist should be played. I agree that it should not be held against him, but I do not think that people who disagree with that should "do so on a political forum".
I agree that this would not be the place for debating the situation at length. The original comment was "on topic" because it related to the performer and what are the ethical considerations of playing that performer on this station.
There are a growing numbers of commenters here who want to restrict the commentary to fit their own narrow political agenda or narrative. They especially want to silence commenters who they deem as "non-experts", as you have done here. This gets to the very heart of Internet freedom and liberty in a free society. The First Amendment does not say "Freedom of Speech shall apply only to (so-called) experts."
All are encouraged to post opinions here and there is no expectation that you bring expertise to the discussion. In fact, I'm bored by the (so-called) experts and I come here to avoid them.
You know what: I actually agree with you; don't know what came over me that day. And of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. Always, unless you deliberately harm others with it.
But if we're to discuss the ethical considerations of playing performers from one country because of its politics or attitude towards minorities, gays, etc. etc, we should do the same with performers from many other countries. Now that would be boring.

Whatever you decide to think about the country, a musician (or anyone else for that matter) should never be blamed for their governments actions, simply because he or she is born there.
By the way, I like this song. It helps if you're used to the gutteral 'spitting' sound.

The 'spitting' is a sound in Hebrew that is not to be found in English. Like Kalahara clicking. If you spoke clicking, the sound would not irritate you. It would communicate to you.
Why am I writing this elementary stuff. Your intent was to enjoy the sound of your crankiness.
Also in the Dutch language we have the 'spitting' sound. We pronounce the letter G as gghhhh and not as in English dzjiiii. We also have the three letter combination 'sch' wich is pronounced as sssghû. I like Hebrew, it's a very compact language and -of course- it's the language of JHWH's chosen people! Shalom Jeruzalem!
BTW; the song is a bit mediocre
sorrry , never heard of such a nationality
its the biggest haux of the 20th century
where is there capital ?
when did they ever had an independent state ?
did the jews that where forced to leave there homes in arab countrys ever got any conpensation ?
israel left gaza for good , insted of bulding an economy they put evrything they got into hatred and war
What a vile post! Galloping hypocrisy!
Only totalitarian psychos think that a state with a capitol is a prerequisite for a community of human beings to claim right to property and life.
Here we have a guy defending the Jews who have only possessed, for the first time in dozens of centuries, a state with a capitol for less than 2/3 of century. And his argument? No state, no capitol, therefore a HOAX!
Huh! What? The dispossessed victims of armed robbery lose their homeland, get pounded back to the prior status of the robbers, and one of the robbers wants to take away, not only the lives of many and the homes of all, but even their right to call themselves "a people".
Who was it said, "We have nothing to fear but stupidity?" Kobkob. You scare me ... into well armed self-defense!
Get it?
this music hurts my ears because it is terrible, not because of nationality or political persuasion of the artist.
The people you call "fanatics" are Palestinians, who have had everything taken from them by a brutal occupier: their land, their homes, their possessions, their children, but not their humanity. They are simply, desperately trying to fight back against a brutal regime which uses the world's fourth largest military against an unarmed civilian population. The situation is not "vexing," it is criminal and should be condemned by every person who values human rights.

This information is from the website, "The Electronic Intifada."
“We certainly see ourselves as ambassadors of Israel in the world, cultural ambassadors, hasbara ambassadors, also in regards to the political conflict.” - Idan Raichel, 2008 (“An interview with Idan Raichel,” translated from Hebrew in online magazine To Australia).
As is evident in Idan Raichel’s quotation above, the musician is willingly part of the Brand Israel campaign, which aims to bring arts to the world in order to, in the words of an Israeli foreign ministry official, “show Israel’s prettier face, so we are not thought of purely in the context of war” (“After Gaza, Israel grapples with crisis of isolation,” The New York Times, 18 March 2009).
Adalah-NY stated in a recent press release that beyond Raichel’s collusion with the Israeli government’s cynical use of art, he has served in and performed for the Israeli army and actively expressed support for the Israel military during its brutal attacks on Gaza in the winter of 2008-09 and criticized Israelis who refused to serve in the army.
And now a personal comment.
As I listen to this "artist" in November of 2012 the Israelis are once again bombing Gaza and killing Palestinians. I understand this is not a political forum, but I would urge that you not play music by Idan Raichel to protest the violence and show solidarity with the victims of Israeli brutality. Thank you.

A few alternate translations of sh'AIR yote shell ha Ha-YEEM...
life's offal
the dregs of life
For Americans, the most exact translation is "leftovers" (as in food not eaten), but "leftovers of life" makes little sense without some context. Offal is precise, but dregs is more poetic and it's a common phrase and therefore gets my vote over scraps. Scraps is a good translation for carrion or giblets, but "scraps of life" is a bit ambiguous by itself.

Reminds me of Xhosa.
You wrote this for my enjoyment. No crankiness after this whimsical and warm piece.
Thanks X10^3!
English has utility, but it can never be said to have aural beauty.
Yes, it can.
"English has aural beauty." And I mean it.
The 'spitting' is a sound in Hebrew that is not to be found in English. Like Kalahara clicking. If you spoke clicking, the sound would not irritate you. It would communicate to you.
True enough. English native speakers should understand that English sounds harsh and crude to folk with other mother tongues, as it has a relatively small range of sounds. I've studied Scots Gaelic for some years, on an off, and that has a vast range of phonemes many of which simply cannot be expressed in English - the 'ch' in 'loch', for instance, or the 'adh' in 'monadh'. To a native Gaelic speaker, English sounds rough and unsubtle and limited. Many singers from a Gaelic background (eg Karen Matheson, Julie Fowlis) choose to sing in Gaelic primarily because it's more lyrically and aurally expressive, even though they can, and sometimes do, sing in English.
I don't know any semitic languages like Hebrew, which for sure can sound strange to English speakers' ears, but as Liz has written, they have a wider range of sounds than English, which is, after all, a bastard creole of German, Norse, Celtic and French (not necessarily in that order). English is unusual in not having any gutteral sounds to speak of, as these are common in most other European languages I know of (eg Spanish, German). Anglocentric complaints about Hebrew (or Gaelic, or whatever) are like drinkers of El Plonko edition vin ordinaire complaining about complex appellation controlée wines. English has utility, but it can never be said to have aural beauty.
too bad the holy land the jeru salem has become has become a land of war
it must have been beautiful
Yes, and now with Israel hot to attack Iran, things will go from bad to worse. And many think that what Israel starts, we'll have to finish!
And from the ratings, I am not the only person who feels this way.
Your reaction to the language "calling it spitting" is juvenile and borders on the intolerant.
I do agree with you that the song is not otherwise anything special.
Like it.

Comments, Opinions?
My take on RP is this: RP is not a "radio station" in the typical sense. Picture yourself a guest in Bill's living room. You sit back in a nice comfy chair, and he plays you some of his old faves, some future classics, and the occasional "experiment". To all of the above, your opinions are encouraged. But I would feel inclined to phrase my personal critiques as if I were an appreciative guest, as opposed to a fan at a hockey game.
Then there's this: when is the last time you played RP & didn't hear something worth adding to the collection?
Nicely put
