Those particular tax laws probably date to a time when marriage was considered something the state had a "compelling interest" in because the morality of the day stipulated that only married couples could breed.  It's an example not only of legislating morality but of social engineering via taxation.

It goes the other way too: a two-earner household can pay higher rates married than single because they get bumped to a higher bracket (the "marriage penalty"). With one earner making substantially more than the other it works the other way.

If you want to talk taxes, go find another thread. Marriage has nothing to do with sex (all too often, unfortunately). But I think someone here doesn't know that.

Just yesterday I was talking with my business partner about marrying her life partner of 15+ years.  They didn't want to get married, they feel committed enough without the paper.  But we opened up the Turbo Tax, and plugged in the numbers comparing filing separately as singles, and filing jointly as a married couple.  Their tax savings were at least $2,000 per year.

Then we started wondering why the government would offer incentives for marriage?  What's in it for them?

Maybe the conservatives (who are religious) feel better about people not living in "sin?"   {#Ask} Good question.

That is just the nature of marriage these days...many people settle/choose too quickly....or a partner changes drastically on them...or worse things....and then find that they really don't want to have to pay for the mistake with the rest of their lives. If the "for life" stigma/burden is removed, maybe it would be easier for people to decide to find happiness.

I agree, but shit does happen sometimes, even if they do. I dodged two bullets in the past. If I'd married them, I'd probably be divorced now. It really does pay (literally) to be picky. {#Lol}
