Just yesterday I was talking with my business partner about marrying her life partner of 15+ years.  They didn't want to get married, they feel committed enough without the paper.  But we opened up the Turbo Tax, and plugged in the numbers comparing filing separately as singles, and filing jointly as a married couple.  Their tax savings were at least $2,000 per year.

Then we started wondering why the government would offer incentives for marriage?  What's in it for them?

I often think to myself that some people should just live together and quit making it legal. All they do is make attorneys rich. I also think (and I know this sounds horrible) that if people do have marriages, there can be renewal period every 5 years to stay or go without any legals becoming involved. That is just the nature of marriage these days...many people settle/choose too quickly....or a partner changes drastically on them...or worse things....and then find that they really don't want to have to pay for the mistake with the rest of their lives. If the "for life" stigma/burden is removed, maybe it would be easier for people to decide to find happiness.
