They told me not to smoke drugs, but I wouldn't listen
Never thought I'd get caught and wind up in prison
Chalk it up to youth but young age I ain't dissin'
I guess I just had to get it outta my system
Outta my system, outta my system
Oh Lord I'd never do it now I know what I ain't missin'
Glad I went and got it all outta my system

The lust of youth versus married security
I'm glad I'm here now, but just between you and me
I had to get it out and make the deals
And learn to know how it feels, but that it ain't real
Outta my system', now oh outta my system
There's a way to have it all you know I ain't kiddin'
Some things I know I'll never get outta my system

If you don't live now, you ain't even tryin'
And then you're on your way to a midlife crisis
Livin' it out anyway you feel
You can feel it in your bones, but try to deny it
Wipe it off your face but your eyes won't hide it
You knew it all along but never made it clear

They told me not to steal cars, said I'd wind up in prison
Thought I knew it all yeah I wouldn't listen
Chalk it up to young age but youth I ain't dissin'
I guess I just had to get it outta my system

Outta my system, now oh outta my system
I'm glad I did it all then I know what I ain't missin'
Glad I went and got it all outta my system

I'm glad I did it all now I know what I ain't missin'
Glad I went and got it all outta my system, oh
I'm glad I did it all now I know what I ain't missin'
Glad I went and got it all outta my system, oh, oh, oh

Giving this an 8 cause everybody is so negative
Wait...this is My Morning Jacket?
Then how and why am I actually -- comprehending -- the lyrics? He's not swallowing, mumbling or garbling. WTF?
I wish I liked the music more.

+1

at least he's speaking a truth, and packaging it in a Kinks sound no less.  I wish they would play this song when you have to give a pee sample with the guard standing in your bathroom stall when you're getting vetted to work for the Cook County court system.  No less dehumanizing, but it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.
Is it just me or does the singer sound like he has a clothespin on his nose or something?

Doesn't sound like he normally does.

Or maybe he is being held upside down off the roof of the Sears Tower by a giant blue orangutan.

But I could be wrong...
Sounds like an attempt so sound like early Who stuff...Nice 6E5 Magic Eye tube though....

cheers to that.  i worry that this once promising band has long since peaked.

If I didn't know in advance, I would never think this was MMJ. Not good enough IMHO.
Not loving the cheesy lryics - but no one's mentioned the Kinks. Reminds me of them a bit - they could be storytellers.
Saw these guys last night at Meadow Brook in suburban Detroit. They closed for Neko Case.
Channeling The Who....with the Ramones for sauce. Makes the album title relevant, anyway.

I agree. Love MMJ, but this blows.

Time for "I'm an Adult Now"

This is not good MMJ. Sounds like something Shaun Cassidy would create in the seventies. Cheesy beat, uber-contrived story-telling... {#Smile}

Who?
Yes. Who, at First...  I didn't know he could sing.  But Yes can.

Me too - thought it was an old outtake.

Here are the opening lyrics:

"They told me not to smoke drugs, but i wouldn't listen
Never thought I'd get caught and wind up in prison

So, I wonder: which church camps have you been attending? {#Lol}
Gotta get this song "Outta My System"....now engaging Mute button....

church camp music.

Them or Beta Band
Re the cover: it's a Tuning Eye (or Magic Eye). Follow the External Links at the bottom for more info. In my youth, I used to work on radios that used these; brings back fond memories. {#Smile}

I keep waiting to hear the chorus of "Happy Jack" after the first verse.

come on folks, let´s push this a little. the average rating is a shame!
hearing this one for the first time, it deserves AT LEAST an 8 - probably more.

Digging the new MMJ songs.  How about playing "Wonderful"
New MMJ!!!  Things are definitely looking up today...

No

I would like to see Fleet Foxes try to copy this sound.

In reference to the cover art.
Let me be the first to say, "I, for one, welcome our new big green eyed overlords."

I don't understand the bad ratings, this song blends 50's retro, with 60's ideals and with a strong influence of modern music. I think it's one of the most innovative song's I've heard in a long time, and it's even more suprising it comes from a band that's been around quite a while.
Yes it is hard to ignore that cover.  It reminds me of the War of the Worlds remote camera, in the original movie from a scene that still gives me shivers when I think about it.

I like the song a lot and don't know how I've missed these guys since apparently they've been around for a while.  May have to invest in a few songs.  Recommendations anyone?
Sure sounds like a Beach Boys influence in this song.

Interesting, and different from most MMJ I've heard...
A very solid 2! The morning jacket thing does not fit me very well!
...is that wheatley from portal 2 on the cover?..it certainly looks like some manner of AI core...
...nice segue from running to stand still; cool!..

...that's a particularly tough track to follow after, too...
What do you make of that album cover?  Big Green Eye?

I like most morning jacket, and this sounds great at first listen.
