There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I'm frightened by those who don't see it

When nothing is owed, deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected
If you're loved by someone you're never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it.

There was a dream
One day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid, with a head full of doubt
So I scream til I die or the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell you what's wrong and what's right
And it flies by day and it flies by night
And I'm frightened by those who don't see it

For all the naysayers of this song... read the lyrics carefully. Read between the lines. If you know of someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, then they might have meaning for you.
I like the wise lyriks, in my opinion.
Oh wow.. all the negativity..  watched a documentary on these guys..  I enjoyed it thoroughly.. you know guys, we're all " just walking each other home" right?

very odd song to be so passionately negative about... I mean, it's the first time I've heard it, and though not a great fan, it's not annoying, offensive, boring or anything particularly "bad" - it's a relatively middle of the road "heart-warming" tune that doesn't deserve vitriol.

Edited to say: I hate this song so much that I keep forgetting I've already rated it low and commented several times about it. Oops. This is not normal for me, I can't think of another song I feel so strongly about.
Came here to find another living soul that feels this way. HATE this song. It feels so, "you all are sheep, you're all so deluded, I'm so aware and you all "scare" me because you aren't as smart and aware as me." The kind of guys that vote third party and look down on everyone else.

This song gives me visions of a Pub of drunken Irishmen merrily singing this song together.

I don't like to dismiss songs, but this one seems formulaic. It's almost laid out as a step by step production. Earnest yet shallow. I hope this is not seen as condescending, since those who write songs and perform them are doing this because they believe in the outcome. But, honestly, this particular very popular piece rubs me the way a sharp grater works a piece of ginger. Yep: dinner time.

Unabashedly romantic and vulnerable. Beautifully performed.

Because the Mumfords are pretensious and you hear that. A moderator of my fasvorite radio satiom Radioeins called it "Stadium Folk". That's it.

One other thing that needs to be shared is that all of the art on their album covers is done by Scott Avett.  Yep.  That too.  :)

Oh Darn! Where would music be if all popular songs were dismissed Because, they were "popular". An thoughtful message hopefully heard by many people.

Good description.
Saw the Avett Bros in concert in February and their live rendition of this song was AMAZING. Great band.

I think it's actually a very well-executed painting on that cover - skillful use of light and shadow.  Whether or not it makes for a good album cover is another matter.

No....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Avett Brothers!!! Great song, thanks for playing!
I like the Avett Brothers' studio albums better than their live ones.  Seems like the audience takes over on the live productions, and the band tends to overplay/over sing when the audience gets too into it.
Check the Avetts  out at Bob Boilen's tiny desk.  Best comment between songs:  "Did you swallow an amplifier?"

The vocals really are perfect for the lyrics here.  That is the mark (not necessarily the quality of the voice itself), and they hit it.  It is an intangible, so maybe hard to explain. But you feel the right emotions, and you feel them deeply . Yearning.

I think Leo Sayer had a single with almost exactly that song title; the B-side was a punk rock version of "Short'nin' Bread" played on the kalimba.

Feels like a beautiful connection between this and "Ripple." Thanks for this combination.

Three plays in the last 30 days? Sure it's not the last 30 hours? Just seems like it, that's all.
I almost resisted the urge to say something snarky before hitting PSD. Almost.
Just saw these guys in Camden at the xpn festival. Man, these guys know how to entertain. The best show I have been to in years. So much talent and energy. I highly recommend seeing them if you have the opportunity.

seeing them in a small venue like The Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte (which is pretty much their hometown) is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.They put on just the best live show ever. love the music, the emotion, the energy.
Love the Avett Bros.  Saw them at the Crest in Sacramento last summer.  Great show.  They really love their audience loves them back.

There isn't a brain surgeon or nuclear physicist out there who didn't have to make the decision to become what they became — in fact, I would argue that in cases where above-average effort is required, the positive decision to be something and the requisite follow-through are all the more crucial.  The line in the song isn't guaranteeing or even promising success — it's saying that the first step to getting where you want to go is committing to the journey.

And ain't nuthin wrong with that.

This song is pretty good now that they are not playing it so much!{#Stop} 6 -> 7

And I agree. It's too easy to say "You're damn wrong, get things right", but you're not a guru just by saying that.

However, these guys do have nice lyrics.
