Zephyr & I stand out on
West End Avenue
Talking about the things that
All of us used to do
And the wind kicks up with the smell of rain
The kids are gone but the souls remain
Zephyr and I sort out our
Long time memories
Do you remember, he says,
The 1970's
This was a youth mall
Of America on this street
All of us hanging here
Like underage cops on a beat
And the wind kicks up in the smell of rain
Now the kids are gone but their souls remain
The graffiti goes but the walls retain
The flowers go but the earth must still remain
In spring the tide in Riverside
Will wash away the cold and frozen
River rain will clean the stain and
Wash away wash away downstream
Out on the corner by the
Fireman's Monument
This was the place where all the
Fatherless teenagers went
Well the wind kicks up in the smell of rain
The kids are gone but the souls remain
The graffiti's gone and the walls complain
The flowers go but the earth must still remain

Initially, the beat is very similar to Lou Reeds song 'Vicious'...
Love this.
Saw Vega some years ago when she played the Stockholm summer Jazz festival. An unexpected treat. Somewhat spoiled by my bored 6-year-old exclaiming loudly during a lull, ‘Oh no, is she going to sing AGAIN?!’ Vega was gracious enough to say, ‘I’ll make it brief’. Woman to woman, I think she felt my pain.
I had to look, because so many aspects of this song made me think of a combo of artists I like; to name: Luscious Jackson, Crash Vegas, and Jane Siberry.... :) 123K
Not my taste!
KT Tunstall also worked with Suzanne Vega on her 2007 album Beauty & Crime , singing backup on songs "Zephyr and I" and "Frank and Ava". ...
Always up for Suzanne Vega...but this is not my first choice.
Gotta dance through the house! =)
I love Suzanne, but she's in cruise control on this song.

Now...Suzanne Vega!!!
I appreciate Bill's approach...entice the audience with smooth female vocals! Kind of shuttin' my eyes here and imagine them all singing to me now!!!

Here we go again!
Her (very) first album was a 10!
After that she turned into another
one-album wonder (with the exception of
"Luka").

lol... I live on West End Avenue... strange to hear someone singing about the neighborhood. I'm liking this song more and more every time I hear it!
I feel the music is like other Vega songs yet I still enjoy the voice.
Is it just me or are we hearing a lot of Suzanne Vega lately? It's OK with me!
I enjoy this song.

I usually quite like Suzanne Vega, but that was incredibly dull.

She is an attractive woman. (I'm a year older than her, so you 30 somethings STFU). I'd ask her out.
What about 25?
Lots of fond memories of catching her at small venues like the Bitter End in NYC in the 80s. Loved her then and still do, one of the few that still feels as relevant to my life now as decades ago.
With the first couple bars I'm awaiting "vicious, you hit me with a flowe-er" however what follows is just as cool.........
This has a nice feel to it: listening to the beat and guitars makes me feel like I'm walking in the park on a sunny day... hoping that Luka kid is playing ball far away from home.

Marlena on the wall is the only song by her I really love. This is okay.
I have this heard a lot lately, I seem to like it.
...bonus points for the phasey guitar break...

Never thought I'd hear SV follow the Pretenders. Especially early Pretenders. But it works!
It worked for the first two drumbeats and then the sad realization hits.
Hard to find anything wrong with anything she does. 7
Gotta love SV
I still love her voice....like she's whispering in my ear..and gently panting hmmmmmmmm
A very fine disc indeed, all of it.....!
Fun New York song! 7, at least
All of us hanging here
Like underage cops on a beat...
one of her better tunes
What a voice...as good as the early days...all those years of Whiskey and cigars couldn't spoil it....
Her voice is a... waoooooooo... JEWEL!
She drives me crazy (houu houu.. like no one else)
Cool to hear a song about the Upper West Side in the old days...
