Oh, gotta see, gotta know right now
What's that riding on your everything
It isn't anything at all
Oh, gotta see, gotta know right now
What's that writing on your shelf
In the bathrooms and the bad motels
No one really cared for it at all
Not the gravity plan

Early, early in the morning
It pulls all on down my sore feet
I wanna go back to sleep

In the motions and the things that you say
It all will fall, fall right into place
As fruit drops, flesh, it sags
Everything will fall right into place
When we die, some sink and some lay
But at least I don't see you float away
And all the spilt milk, sex and weight
It all will fall, fall right into place

Oh, gotta see, gotta know right now
What's that riding on your everything
It isn't anything at all

Early, early in the morning
It pulls all on down my sore feet
I wanna go back to sleep

In the motions and the things that you say
It all will fall, fall right into place
As fruit drops, flesh, it sags
Everything will fall right into place
When we die, some sink and some lay
But at least I don't see you float away

Killer track. So glad that it's on RP's playlist. Puzzled that RPers have rated it below 7 :(
Yeah, cool, can't get much weirder than these guys sometimes... Feels perfect coming along not long after Future Islands, another delightfully weird and wonderful band... Golden Goat is back around town with a vengeance. We're having the coolest, lushest seasons in forever. The Indian Peaks are covered in snow and laid in with glaciers like they haven't been in years. The hiking and biking trails in Boulder and Louisville are intense and infinitely caprivating, and RP is making me listen to the Soundtrack of The Summer with much excitement and anticipation.
Such a great album and tune!
RIP Jeremiah
A brilliant album imo.  Thanks RP.

Issaquah's own . . . Modest Mouse.

This is one of my all-time favourite songs!! Thank you Bill
Singer sounds very much like (Sandy) Alex G ...  now there's an artist you can give some air time to Bill!
I used to love to cover this song after I wore myself out playing the piano for too many hours.{#Sleep}
Among its numerous unexpected side effects, this tune kicks my butt to go to the gym club this morning.
Hats off to Modest Mouse for the April 30th performance at The Anthem in DC.  I had not listened closely since the early 00s, so wasn't entirely sure what to expect... but was entirely energized by the music and performance that night!  (Only issue was a wish that mix had been different during an early spell where Mr. Brock's comments were difficult to hear.)

not exactly a whammy bar but some kind of floating tremelo is how they do it live if this video is any indication.  https://youtu.be/QYMeIlFvHn0?t=1m18s

I identify with this line every dang day.

Any kid with a free or inexpensive DAW (digital audio workstation) program could have made that effect, even before 2000.
And it sounds like one did.

The effect is IMO far overdone, and is far from the biggest weakness displayed.

To each their own, but I had a hard time not dipping below a 3. Ho-hum at best for me. {#Snooty}
Great band.

             Issaquah's own.

It's something special. Everytime Modest Mouse is on air, the music definitely falls out of the tapestry. {#Music}
MORE MOUSE!
Everyone in my trailer park thinks the instruments are tuned perfectly for this song!

This is by far the best song ive heard by this band....10

If someone were capable of writing a relatively quiet song which literally "gives you a headache", then that "art" would seem to be getting your attention.

Trying hard to be my usual judgemental, dick self but this stupid pop song is elevating my mood above that. Just like 1964 cruising in my best friend's Impala listening to Martha and the Vandellas- the situation becomes un-mope-able.
Great stuff!

This emotocon may not make sense.  It is because I am crippled at the moment.  I have no means to express myself.   I am bereft of graphics.  I am a dumb mute.  I love this song BTW.

Bill,  Where are the emotocons???

(after the upgrade to RP 2.0 there were hardly any emotocons available.  Hopefully by the time you read this, this issue has been remedied)

My art is the embodiment of imperfection.  But it's fabulous therapy and my children enjoy it.

I think that's the point. Perfection in imperfection as said before. It's your willingness to embrace the possibility of music in the absurd that is the question

Word. Must mute.

Specifically, their pitch is wavering like a phonograph record that is off-center. That's weird for a digital track — unless it was digitized from a real record that wasn't centered.

Ack!  Bitter.  Makes me cringe.  Creative, and unique, but still....

Yeah, but his voice fits the chaotic sound of their band. I saw them on their last tour and they were great!

The Moon & Antarctica IS their best, I think, but partly because the production is better than some of the older stuff. Also because it's a cohesive concept album. Still, there are so many great songs on CD's like Lonesome Crowded West, Building Nothing out of Something, and Long Drive with Nothing to Think About. Love to hear Bankrupt on Selling or Heart Cooks Brain on RP. I think Brock has inspired a generation of musicians to value creativity and cleverness in lyric writing. He's probably helped sell a few Bukowski books, too.

Great song. Great album.
Thought I was hearing Rusted Root. I like this as well!
Bill, yer my Jesus. Praise you Bill, praise you
Yuck. Sounds like they're out of tune. Really grates on the ears; I always have to turn the speakers way down until it's over.
Tolerable, as far as MM goes with me.
K, I had to check. This progression of songs is on my regular playlist; I thought I'd shut off radio paradise for a second. Impressive!
Hm...was just listening to Good News for People Who Like Bad News when I thought I\'d flip over to RP to see what\'s playin\'. Guess what? It was Modest Mouse.

Yep! Ugly Casanova worth a listen too!

Hmmm...Might be a better fit than some other cover approaches...for example, I got all excited and bought the Sun Kil Moon release of MM (entitled "Tiny Cities"). Although I'm not 'against' covers, especially those that try a new instrumental approach, I was disappointed by much of the CD. I imagined it would be helpful for a listener who can't make out Brock's lyrics, but I found the overall effect to be less moving than MM.
Yah Police! Sting is much better with his friends.
YES!
Isaac is a lyrical geniuses! For people who care about songwriting MM is the best! After reading some of the comments below I'd say you need to spend some time with the music and really listen to truly appreciate it.
First listen...ok. On the fence here.
I still never seen that commercial with this. It does make me sad though. Oh well....Nothing will stop me from listening to Modest Mouse though.
Sounds a little like Jose Gonzales/Zero 7 but a little more random.

Excellent reason to Kill Your Television!
Thanks for the Modest Mouse, RP. Saw them in Chico and was stunned by the coarseness of their live performance, but their albums have a very unique sound that I really dig.

Bluegrass and Modest Mouse????? Got to be interesting.

What should I say? MM... Much More! Always an experience!

Love it. Sounds casual and unique.
Can't get past the fact that I usually prefer musicianship and vocal talent, and am not really finding any with MM.
One of my fave MM songs, after "Polar Opposites".

"a laidback Lindsey Buckingham"....that is food for thought.

No...........just..no
mucho excellento!
No wonder they're modest. Nothing too braggable going on here.

I like the way the song lilts with its melody. MM just sneeks up on you, you don't expect to like the songs, then you just do.
Wimpy. Really, really wimpy.
If you like this, try Ugly Casanova....Singer-songwriter Isaac Brock's influence is heard. Great Band!!
This is a world away from "Float On." Much, much better.

When it's art, that isn't necessarily the case. Modest Mouse sounds good to my ears. Is that specific enough? ...Anyway, this is my favorite MM album. Nice stuff.

Same for me. I've listened to that disc a bunch. Still can't decide if I like them enough to dig further in their catalogue.
Sometimes a lack of talent can be easily mistaken for music that is "different." I've often noticed in reviews of Modest Mouse in the press, that critics are quick to heap on the praise, but they write in generalities. I can't remember reading anything specific about exactly what it was they liked. I remember one noting that the guitar was mixed in a particular M.M song in a way that reminded him of how Mick Jones' frequently mixed his guitar. So, I guess he thought the song was good because the guitar's sound made him think of the Clash? I've also seen small blocks of lyrics quoted, presented by themselves, out of context, as if their very existence within the reviewer's article is evidence enough of greatness. So, we read how the "Bullfrog's eye-fire can't be quenched, by my waning interest in existing," but no explanation is offered why this was significant to the reviewer. I've found, most often, that when people truly like something, they can offer a specific reason why.
I saw them in New York last week. This was the only song they didn't play. This was used in a TV commercial and I guess they sold the complete rights away.
Awesome. A 9. Also check A Perfect Disguise from the same album.
It is very funny for me to hear you play modest mouse. Back in 1996, I took my daughter and friends to a Beck concert. MM opened for him. The girls met and became friends with the MM guys. Boy am I old. They have stayed in touch ever since. Now they made it big.
