Look at me coyote
Don't let a little road dust put you off
You can't judge a book
Well, you know that stuff
There's a tear in my upholstery
And a hole in my shoe
But don't you just wish that you could
Make half of the speed I do
Speed I do, speed I do, speed I do

You can't catch me coyote
Though there may be blood on the tracks
There may be some bridges burning
Behind our backs
But I got my laundry on the backseat
And an itinerary too
And don't you just wish that you could
Make half of the speed I do
Speed I do, speed I do, speed I do
Speed I do, speed I do, speed I do

Now I'm a speck on your horizon
Getting smaller fast
An ambush wouldn't be surprising
I hope it's better than your last

Once again the roadrunner
Leaves the coyote in the dirt
You've got another plan of action
But we all know it ain't never gonna work
It must be hard having dog dreams
That never come true
And don't you just with that you could
Make half of the speed I do
Speed I do, speed I do, speed I do
Speed I do, speed I do, speed I do

Have been a big fan of Mark over the years. Regretfully, I never saw Dire Straits live however did see him a few times about 15 years ago. I also saw him tour with Eric Clapton at The Montreal Forum back in the early 90s. I don't mind his newer stuff but equally I don't seek it out either. To me, this album was him at his peak (solo).
Knopfler makes it seem, um...easy.

J.J Cale
Totally sublime track - awesome.

This guy is a one off.

Highly beg to differ! Both, very "accomplished" artists but, IMHO, not even remotely close.

I just love the chorus of 'spee die do, spee die do'. If you were asked to come up with a coherent song with that as a chorus anyone would struggle. Great song

:-D Meep-meep!
I don't usually enjoy listening to MK, but when I do, it's when I listen to this song.
It's probably a 6 or so, for me, until those guitar and band breaks kick in. Then, at least an 8 (again, for me, for whatever that's worth).
Yeah, agree, there's a J. J. Cale vibe to this, which is welcome.
Few bands play at the level these folks do.
I always initially think this is the only Cake song I don't know...

I think point A was covered perfectly well by Marr. As far as RP goes, so far only about 10% is crap. Maybe there's another 20% that I don't like, then maybe another 20% that I see artistic merit in and yet doesn't move me. That leaves a roughly 50% success rate, far higher than I find on commercial radio.
The crap rate on RP, while admittedly lower than commercial radio, is well over 50% and that's before we even get to questions of taste. Aimee Mann, for instance, cannot sing worth a damn no matter how you slice it. (Neither can Bob Dylan, but at least he can write.)
Music is entirely subjective, and there's nothing more silly than an arrogant music critic.
Unless it's someone who pretends (or even really does) love a song merely because it's popular, depressing and/or praised by their "artistic" friends.

Knopfler wrote the soundtrack to a little-known movie called "Local Hero," and apart from being a delightful movie, the music is rather awesome. (And he doesn't sing. LOL!)

I have "Local Hero" queued up on my DVD player for when I have a day off.  BTW - roadrunners have a "solar panel" on their backs, between their wings, and they have to charge their solar panels to make them fast. Otherwise, they're sluggish, clumsy, and easy to catch. (I learnt this from a visit to the Sonora Desert Museum in Arizona.)

J.J. Cale is alive and well.

Let me guess, your dad somehow ended up in the piano as it careened off a cliff with the anvil in hot pursuit.  Meanwhile the roadrunner sped off into the sunset.

Does this Roadrunner beat the Coyotes a lot?  The only Roadrunner cars I ever knew about were not racecars, but kind of looked like a late 60's version of what "Supercar" would look like - like in the late 60's - kind of a tank. . .
It still reminds me of the cartoon.

The fractured chord you hear at the beginning (and at some point in the middle of this) and what sounds like a lot of the rest of the song has been lifted wholesale from a rather obscure French track, J'aime regarder les filles by Patrick Coutin. A pity this hasn't got the guts, the verve (and the perverted lyrics) of the source...

Today's theme seems to be guys with not the greatest voices who really know how to sing. Mark Knopfler, Pete Townsend, John Hiatt, the chap from Rusted Root. I got thinking about this because someone earlier said David Byrne didn't have a good voice, although I opined he did. Also had some Chris Isaak, although he's got great pipes. And really knows how to sing.
Very Cool.
