Jackie Cane was everybody's sugar
She gave it all wherever it took her
They used her up before the sell-by date
To be so sweet was her only mistake

The only flower in a concrete garden
Destined to be the rock that wouldn't harden

Jackie Cane was everybody's sugar
She'd melt away if only she could of
Taken for granted
Abused and drained
They ran her dry and
Then it never rained

She was the queen
Of the 25th hour
They looked so sweet
But the after-taste was sour

Salty days for Jackie Cane

I like this song. The version I heard on their phenomenal performance "Hooverphonic with orchestra" was even slightly better. That was such a beautiful fusion of them with a philharmonic orchestra. Find the DVD, it is definitely a treat.

Hooverphonic With Orchestra had Noemie Wolfs as the singer. The group has gone through so many singers over the years, any one voice will fit better with some songs than with others. For example, I prefer Geike Arnaert's voice on the original Mad About You.

Jesus... there's comments on here almost a quarter century old.

I wonder if some day websites will have 100 year old comments, with people pondering the lives of others who posted their undecipherable hot takes in another era.
Is that simpleton guitar playing or what?
Just kidding. I didn't read much of the comments but wouldn't be surprised if such a comment existed.
I gave it a 7.
Here's the Magnificent Tree on the album cover nowadays, same view:

There's also another view on the back of the album.  I wonder if that tree is just random or if the band had a connection with the place already.
Searched for "Jackie Cane" and found this on Wikipedia:

Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane (album released in 2002).

Clip from wiki article:

It is a concept album, telling the story of fictional singer Jackie Cane. ...

The story revolves around the fictitious character Jackie Cane who leaves her identical twin sister in order to become a professional singer. Driven to the brink of insanity by the pressures of fame, Jackie quits show business and returns home to attempt reconciliation with her sister. But, still bitter from years of being put last, her sister kills both of them with a poisoned Last Supper.

I like the band choices, if not always the songs. This one pales in comparison to their best. And they had a good run of many good songs before petering out on the last 2-3 albums.
Hooverphonic, sonic, bionic riff for sure.

The start of this song is very similar to a part of the album Incantations, of Mike Oldfield. :P
Loving this right now.

Liking this a lot.  Great bridge.  Great riff.  cool vocals.
Nice riff{#Bananajam}
Mary Hill used to hang out in Cherry Hill Park.

The surf guitar is the "Fender Sound"? no really, I want to know.

Not necessarily, though Dick Dale is known for his use of a Fender Stratocaster.  It seems like it's more of the high-treble (single-coil) attack of guitars such as Mosrites, Silvertones, and Danelectros, as well as a few different Fender models, with the reverb being set very deep.

what happened to your green RT?
Just one of many RP greatest hits; never tire of hearing it.  10+

...and followed by Morphine - it gets better than this?
really like this song...
Greatness!  Small (g)odlike...
Oooh new one on me.  Lovin it except the odd backing vocal from Stephen Hawking.

Then i look down and see i commented once before so maybe just didn't have a lasting impact.  Its hard with all the great stuff you hear on RP.

For some reason my brain had me convinced that they were singing about Jackie Chan. Sometime I wish I had been born clever instead of good looking.

oooh - ooh - ooh - Jackie Blue...
oops, wrong Jackie.

Precisely what Radio Paradise is ALL about - giving us obscure, genius cuts from bands that would never see the light of day otherwise. Providing hope for music fans across the globe that there are countless magnificent musicians creating sound as good if not FAR better than any of the prominent commercial superstars that smother the airwaves and clutter the shops.

I agree with your praise of RP, but feel I should point out that Hooverphonic (website) are pretty damn big in the Benelux countries in Europe and tour extensively, and their music has been used on film soundtracks. Living in the UK I'd not heard of them prior to RP, for which much thanks as usual to Becky and Bill, but they are hot stuff in Belgium. Not that it takes a lot to be hot in Belgium... ;-)

This song spun off a 'concept album' called "Hooverphonice presents Jackie Cane" which isn't bad, but stretches the material a bit thin IMO. Worth having in the collection, though.

A solid 8 from the Nottingham jury.

This gets me.
Kind of Garbage-like
Hooverphonic always seems to impress me. Not their best song but still better than most bands.
Great job pairing good vocals with sub-par music.
Darn you Radio Paradise. My music wish list at Amazon just got longer. I'm going to need a second job just to keep up.
Probably one of my least favorite songs from one of my favorite bands.

There's definitely a bit of 'Strawberry Fields' in the middle, there, yes. I like this.
Never noticed the lyrics before. Very nice!

Love this tune. Slightly weird. Original. 9.

Hooverphonic's best...eclecticly different.
Love that Cylon in the background saying "salty days for jackie cane" ... glad the poor fellow is finding some work again.

Such a neat song. The band doesn't really have a strong image though. I checked the website and there is no real branding there at all.
How 21st Century! Marketing major? Very nice song.

Isn't that a good thing?
Doesn't have much to do with how good or bad they are, but it does have a lot to do with their sales. Their own loss I would say, but not ours.

enough enough!!!!! I like these guys, but am soooooo sick of this tune....and her strained vocals...and the hipped out whacky stuff stuck in near the end. Time to put this one back in the vault
8/80,...err 8/10
Sweet pulp-core
Belgium, eh? This almost qualifies as full restitution for giving us Brussels sprouts. Like it.
Great tune, but played a little too much here on RP lately. WAY too much.
The opening riff on this reminded me of Link Wray, the father of the power chord. Link just died at 76...RIP, dude.
They nicked the strawberry fields melatron sample sound.
This is the first time I've listened to this song loud enough to hear that weird computerized voice echoing the chorus. I like it.
fabulous rhythm. I like it more & more.
Feels like it should be on the soundtrack of a Quentin Tarantino film.

Keep Hooverphonic and just send us your beer. Thanks.
Love fuzzy music. Needs to be more fuzzy. But nice tho.

Constantly, con-bloody-onstantly you morons make the same dumb joke about Hooverphonic's name, makes me pretty certain you aren't listening to the music, if you were, and I'd expect the sort who find the varied and cultured tastes of RP would, you would shortly see Hooverphonic as a unique and beautiful sound. Seriously, Hooverphonic is an amazing band, one of my all-time favourites - listen next time. Or at the very, very least - if you honestly, by some sort of mental handicap can't enjoy them, at least refrain from posting a bad joke that a horde of other flatscans have. That is all -Cap
Bond. ... James Bond.
I like this song, however, the CD's this group puts out are not consistant. Maybe one or two are good, the rest are rejects.

actually yes... i am glad. i don't particularly like either version (actually cant stand them), but i've been wondering who did the original ever since i first picked up Live Rust way back when.

Way cool...
Sickening sweet. Sounds like Olivia Newton John.

i agree entirely. that first album was their best by a long shot. every track is excellent.

it sorta reminds me of that VW ad where they're driving around and pick up the couch...though it also seems a Hooversonic song was in a VW ad at some point thanks to some google searching...go figure
A great track from a great album. Slightly weird mix on the album but great stuff all the same. This track sounds like it could have been in a rock musical. Its just got that stage sound. I can see how you could love it or hate, me, I love it.

But ewww... don't like that bit at the end.... with all those kids voices or something??

whats odd... is that this song was played on the local "classic rock" station and the "alternative" station. amazingly enough, not a single person complained about it in either place.
interesting
Goes onto my Christmas giftlist =)
This is a cool song. It immediately caught my attention. A mix between the electronica sound and that "dirty" guitar...I find it very interesting.
First time I heard this I had to grab the geetar off the wall and figure out that lick...nice but cool. the song is the strangest mix of 60's - 90's music - especially the background sounds/percussion. Neat.
very catchy.. smoky song, lyrics, vocals... awesome!!!!
My favorite touch in this song is the little Casio whatever-the-heck-it-was doing the little plinko sounds. Nice.
Yes, there are echoes of Velvet Underground. This song sounds MUCH better faster, though. On my CD it sounds faster than here. Maybe you could speed it up artificially? Other songs also deserve airplay. The group is sheer genius. :D
great song. great vibe. heard it before and liked it enough to buy a copy of the c.d.
Jackie Cane - Go, RP, Go! More Hooverphonic!!!!
Hooverphonic made two wonderful discs. Then they made this. Oh well.
Plodding, disposable...
Very nice sound this Hooverphonic !
Super groovy cool.
yes....this is good :D i like it. more please. thx bill.

lily, did you upload this? I really like it.
excellent. hooverphonic is way cool. the older stuff has much more of a mellowed out acid jazz flavor to it though, i must admit.
