Big and I'm bad
And I want you to know
I hang around
Where the grass is greener
Totally naked, baby
Totally nude
'Cause if I want to
Who's gonna stop me?
I'm absolutely free
Living in the trees
The birdies and the bees
'Cause I'm a nature boy
Locked up inside
You can't tell me where it's at
Open up, open up, open the door
Rocks and trees and physical culture
Some days you hide
I guess you wonder where you are
Nature boy, nature man, take me along
We got a life that's undiscovered
We threw it all away
Throw it all away
Rolling in every way
It's irresponsible
So civilized
I guess you wonder where you are
Nature boy, nature man, take me along
Deep in the woods we're undiscovered
I'm a little fish and you're the river
Living in a boat that's underwater
We can tip, tip, tip it over
You can push, push, make it better now
Wake your daddy up
It's a quarter to five
Our little boat
Has lost its rudder
Dive to the bottom
And we never come up
A polka party
For Bob and Martha
I'm absolutely free
Living in the trees
The birdies and the bees
'Cause I'm a nature boy
Think what you like
This is really where it's at
Open up, open up, open the door
We don't need clothes and we don't need money
So civilized
I guess you wonder where you are
Nature boy, nature man, take me along
Deep in the woods we're undiscovered

This is really where it's at....
Every single Talking Heads song grates on my nerves and is sure to make me hit PSD.
David Byrne's voice is very much to blame, but it's not just that, not sure what...
The voice from hell.

Prescient observation, 3 years on.
I like the way Byrne says the word 'nude'.

What a great band, such an influence to so many artists. A SOLID TEN

A cutie is in the eye of the beholder. I find nothing "cute" about Tina. Never did and now the less. Not her fault and I do not really want to talk about the looks of anybody. Since it was you to call her cute I have to say "I VERY MUCH DISAGREE". Ask me again when I am 72 - I might change my mind, if Tiny will be frozen in time!

And, Stingray, you leave alone the Japanese, because maybe, most technical appliances you have at home are made by Japanese.

========================

Dear Calysos,
you are right: I should not have been that...?...."racist" about Japanese. That was stupid and not appropiate, I admit. Still - all Japanese I meet during my travels have been rather weird, to say the least - one way or the other. Maybe simply because they are rather different from us. Intellectually they  cannot be stupid, of course - don't get me wrong. I did not mean that! What I meant instead was..., possibly nothing but a cheap comment with no other foundation than my few own experiences with them. Just being an idiot myself, if you want...!

Still - the appliances in my appartment - not that I care too much - are usually of German origin. Were they Japanese, they were most likely German knock-offs. The same the Chinese are doing now, the Japanese did in the 60's and 70's. "Stealing" German techMology (to say it with "Borat"), then sell it as their own!

Once I had a Japs girlfriend (for a few weeks): The noises she made during sex were so....,funny (to say the least) that I always have to smile, when I seeing or heaing anything Japanese today. Not just that - she was such a weirdo, so different, she stunned me every single day with her XXXXXXXTREME naivity and ways!. Recalling this episode, I am still inclined to repeat: Yes, the Japs are  weird - not only during sex.

Talking Heads...? Yes, I admit it: I have various TH (vinyl) albums myself - at least 3 or 4 early ones.  And yes, I liked the band  during that time - early 70's and several years on. The more advanced I got in music, the longer theTH's. big-time passed, the less I liked them. I do not think that anybody disagrees that David Byrne cannot sing. Still that's not my main reason, since other singers cannot sing neither, though I still like them. Still - the way BYRNE sings is a total annoyance to me today, some 30 years after the Heads' main times. When I hear them nowadays - only on RP, since I would NEVER dare to put them on myself - I am usually close to swtich them off. I simply cannot stand his singing, neither the lyrics and all the simple rest. Like Pink Floyd and Leonard Cohen they are my most beloved "HATE"-object, to say the least! No, sorry, time hasn't done any good to the Talking Heads, if you ask me!

The older I get, the more David Byrne's voice gets on my nerves.
I thought this was Ganggajang at first but its nothing like them.  However looking at who it is I realise the trick my brain fell into.  I had a rather awesome cassette I played to death in my walkman with Ganggajang's self titled first release (a must for all lovers of good aussie music) on one side and Talking Heads Little Creatures on the other.
I totally understand this song. . . being as I am happy to take my kit off in public.
This guy's pseudo-funny music...

I think you are right.  Don't get the TH animus.  At least the massive U2 animus is related to people not liking Bono's preaching.

I was a big fan of the TH since first hearing Psycho Killer on the Max's Kansas City jukebox in 1977.  They immediatly became one of my top ten artists.  They have dropped a bit down the list since then but are still in my top 25.

PERFECT, coming after Drume Negrita...  Awesome memories: a similarly bent Brit named Mike R. and I were driving a little Suzuki Jimny 4WD all over Bali for the first time, Christmas Eve of '88 through New Year's '89, and this was one of a few very key albums we had on tape, and this was perfect played loudly as we drove through fruit-laden jungle down village paths, dodging cows and minibus bemos whose betel-chewing crews and passengers were busy tying down chickens, goats and pigs, zooming past topless local women with cargo on their heads, both of us high as kites on the exotic fragrances and flavors of cloves, cinnamon, coffee, and MUSIC.

The CD cover reminds me of a newly-established brewery just outside Nottingham called Blue Monkey, which does some excellent cask ales:

Blue Monkey logo

Nowt to do with Talking Heads, but IMO a lot more interesting and pleasurable. I hit mute within a second of this song starting, which is likely a record.

Okay, I'm going to disagree with this one. Chris Franz, Tina Weymouth, and Jerry Harrison made up an excellent band behind Byrne. As Byrne's vision expanded—oh, I don't think it dried up—, and let's not fool ourselves into thinking that the Heads were anything but a vehicle for Byrne's ideas, so did his notion of what constituted support. Byrne supplemented and expanded the band as he imagined its sound expanding. This happens all the time—even The Beatles added Billy Preston; the Stones, Sugar Blue and Ry Cooder—the list is endless.

It may be that Byrne's vision outgrew the original band's capacity, but to characterize the original band with the tag "musical paucity" I think denigrates them unnecessarily and misses the point.

Like it - quite a bit

There are a lot of reasons for the changes in the music of Byrne and Talking Heads, but the original line-up were all actually quite good musicians, and they contributed to the quality of the first four albums.  I never heard a smallness or "paucity" in their musical abilities.  The early "vision", I believe, had more to do with the ephemeral thrill of 3, (later 4) art students, being in their early twenties and making music together (and working with Brian Eno, as noted below).
I don't particularly like this song, but I wouldn't say that it's because of the technical skills of the band or any of the other musicians on the record.  David Byrne has as much to do with their less-than-appealing songs as he does with their good ones.

Gooooood questions. I don't get'em either.

I suppose it's because music is such a good means to help you find yourself when you're young (or maybe it aint good alt all but anyway alot of us used it for that) that some people mistake it for something that constitutes them, and not just something they listen to. Hell, yeah, I wore band t-shirts and thought I was so much cooler than the rest (Cranberries in pre-zombie times e.g.) but most people get over it when they mature. Some dont. And some dont mature.

Sometimes it's good to remind ourselves that concentration camp leader requested all kinds of music from the jewsih bands they sent to the gas chambers the following day - even Jazz.

Or maybe read High Fidelity for the ninth and this time actually understand it. Peace, folks.

I saw him a couple of weeks ago.  His voice is amazingly good and I really liked his new things, as well as most of the older.  Being in Memphis, he brought the house down with "Take Me to the River"!!
Or get a DVD of Stop Making Sense. Great performance movie that lists Jonathan Demme as director.

After 12 years in the UK I'm accustomed to more intelligent discourse, even if it gets far more biting than the comments above and below. Back to the topic at hand...I find several TH songs to be mind blowing. For the most part tho, I find Byrne's voice affected and just occasionally repugnant.
