If that seems harsh, sorry. My number one advice is to be nice. Friendly and helpful (not obsequious, just be approachable). If people wish you were dating their daughter, they'll help you out. If you insist on playing the surly iconoclast, you'll do everything yourself, on your dime.

I would like to ask a question of you RP listeners.  I am in this debate with my 21 yr old son regarding his quest to join a band and ultimately perform live gigs.  I keep reminding him that stage presence is a real thing.  He needs to dress for the part just as if he were dressing for any job interview when he goes to open mic nights and auditions.  He argues with me saying that he can dress as he wants and its all about the music.  If a band doesn't hire him solely based on his talent then he doesn't want to be a part of that band.  Don't get me wrong, I love his sense of values and I do somewhat agree with him BUT.....am I wrong to suggest that he should fit in with the band aesthetically?  Yes it is about the music but not ALL about the music.  Unfortunately it matters, doesn't it?  We are talking about paid gigs.
