Yeah, it was before my time - my father told me about it too.  The park was saved from the drawing boards of the notorious Robert Moses.

A ride on the Staten Island Ferry offers great views of the NY harbor including the S of Liberty, takes about 25 minutes one way, and its free (or so says the online info).

The High Line park, which opened to the public today, is viewed from a hotel above it June 9, 2009 in New York City. The High Line was formally an elevated railway 30 feet above the city's West Side that was built in 1934 for freight trains hauling dairy products, produce and meats and had become derelict after the rail closed in 1980. The first portion of the abandoned elevated railway has been transformed into a public park and the rest of the space is to be renovated in the future.

Yes yes yes! And I adore the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but that might be overwhelming for the kids.

The Botanical Gardens, Bronx or Central Park Zoos, Statue of Liberty ...

any good suggestions for us (ie the kids- 5 & 8)

and what should we wear?  I'm thinking layers as it looks like warm/temperate days and cool evenings at the mo ps don't bother recommending sneakers- it ain't happening!!

My favorite things:

~ Going on top the Empire State Building at night

~ Going to Serendipity for Frozen Hot Chocolate (yes, the very same place in the John Cusack movie)

~ Walking through Central Park and hanging out at Bethesda Fountain (and the Strawberry Fields circle—memorial to John Lennon)

~ Checking out shops and cafes and Italian bakeries in the Village (and seeing the mural of Joe Strummer)

~ Grand Central Station

~ Seeing a Broadway show

~ Ray's Pizza——-for GOT'S SAKE don't miss eating Ray's Pizza There are several locations all over Manhattan.

~ Hanging out with rachlan!

I'll probably think of  more ... so much to do, so little time when in NYC.
