My dad enlisted in the navy at the age of 17 in late 1945. By the time he was done with basic training the war was over but he went on to transfer to the air force then served a total of 21 years. Thanks Dad.

My dad was a Navy man right out of high school and was born on 11/11. Double celebration for him! RIP Dad!

Oh. Where did you start that thread?
OK. I'm going to indulge your bad manners and disrespectful attitude and first say that I didn't start "that thread", but there are plenty including the anti war thread. You can take the time to look them up should you so desire to wax productive. Further, I'll explain the general objective of this thread in particular, which I didn't start either. It is to honor U.S. servicemen and women. There is no doubt that your point was valid, but your reasons for placing in this thread in particular seem askew. I'm not a forum monitor, but I am a veteran, and if you wish to carry this pointless parry further, lead on. Excuse me while I remove my halo...

To my English-Canadian grandfather who died in the hospital in Kimberley in the early 1970s, BC screaming like he was back in the trenches of France after a German bomb had sunk in the mud and filled the left side of his body with shrapnel. I still admire and recall with fondness his good humour and love despite the chronic pain that he suffered for over half a century. To my step-grandmother of Dutch Ukrainian origin who personalized and made tangible the brutality of the Bolsheviks. To my Norwegian capo terrorist grandfather who went on to be a successful businessman who always voted conservative. He was truly one of the most civilized men I have ever known. To my mother who taught me the true meaning of the word 'hate'. To young Germans of my generation who have been such a significant source of personal inspiration.
