I learned the "duffel" spelling as well, though I do see the "le" spelling pretty often.  I didn't know it was named for a place; I assumed it was someone's last name, like "leotard", or maybe just a French term for "satchel" or something.

Well, depending on which time period is in question, it was first used as early as 1839.
