Great idea. I think in that parallel universe Neil has a little more vocal talent. These guys have a great sound and keep me listening around for new bands.

I spent 10 minutes trying to suss this out without looiking it up.

Th B side was indeed another great tune written from the point of view of a kid with a lack of self-confidence.

As noted below, numerous times, The Beach Boys version is a cover of a Caribbean folk song which was written before the 1920s.  The Kingston Trio recorded a version in the 1950s.  Were these guys influenced by The Beach Boys?  It's very likely, but it's a traditional chord progression and the original song is about 100 years old.

Thanks for that.  It often seems that many of the "music critics" who post in these threads apparently fail to acknowledge that any music even existed before the 1960s.  There is a strange delusion that everything musical can only be traced back as far as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Doors, Pink Floyd, etc., and that traditional chord progressions, which have existed for centuries, were miraculously "invented" less than 50 years ago.  If the only tool one has is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Yes, its totally Sloop John B. And that is what makes this song so great. It's an update, a remix... oh those blessed days.. and now, so new again. If I had never heard of the Beach Boys, I would sit crossed legged on the floor, in awe. As it is, I fell down, and thought I'd just sit down here for a bit while this played. My butt hurts.
