I am an old woman named after my mother
My old man is another child that's grown old
If dreams were lightning thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago

Chorus:
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go

When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man
But that was a long time and no matter how I try
The years just flow by like a broken down dam.

Repeat Chorus

There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today.
How the hell can a person go to work in the morning
And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.

Repeat Chorus

Well said. Thanks!
Nice cover. John Prine truly was a song writing legend.

Agreed.

This is great though.  Raitt's voice is sublime.

In the early 70s I used to play John Prine  on a regular basis.

One of the few songs that anyone sings and I absolutely love.
We saw Bonnie Raitt in concert not too long ago. She intro'ed this by saying "I still can't believe I'll never get to sing it with him again". Made it that much more poignant.
She is the real deal.

ours was not an absolutely perfect performance, but sitting on Humarock Beach by an off-season fire and singing along with my brother's accoustic guitar it was perfect for me! I love Bonnie's music and she sings in a range my older voice still handles

It's only a hard way to go because most make it that way.
This whole CD set is exceptional. Arlo's story of The City of New Orleans and John's story of Muskie's Florida presidential whistle stop tour are worth the price.

Ab-so-lute-ly! So much good material that isn't City of New Orleans (which is excellent, just played a lot). Talking Backwards, Men Who Love Women (Who Love Men),  A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request to name a few.
Listenin to this towering classic I'm focused on Prine's twangy, gravely voice. Compare it to say,  Randy Newman, and the contrast is real. Prine is THE REAL DEAL. Randy Newman, heck even Bonnie Raitt, all pretenders
Could you imagine yourself walking along the street on any 'ol day, and walking past the mailman, and hearing this being worked out and sung by him while his head is stuck in a mail collection box?

It's the little things isn't it?  Such is how history is made.

True. In the spirit of Steve, as a tribute - absolutely!

"John Prine, who is sitting right over there, wrote 'Angel From Montgomery' and so many other songs that changed my life," Raitt said. Raitt told Uncut magazine that "as a young feminist, the idea that this young man could inhabit the world of a middle-aged woman in a thankless marriage really resonated with me."

Her voice contains a sweetness that is pure and clear.  It usually raises goose bumps on my arm, and this time was no exception.
Yes he might be. I tried to get his version of City of New Orleans on RP but unfortunately it was rejected.

Actually the 'cheese' remark referred to a different song than this one, and one that did not even involve Ms. Raitt or Mr. Prine.  See remarks below.  There is no cheese anywhere on this gorgeous tune.

Tremendously well written song.{#Clap}9

Haven't heard either of them do this song in years. Thanks.
I've seen her perform this from 15 feet away and it brought me to tears.

Every once in awhile Bill plays 'Sam Stone'. My all-time fave JP tune is 'Muhlenberg County', but he has so many great songs. One of the best songwriters ever.

Hard to improve on this version -  Raitt and Prine together.
Love the contrast between Bonnie's sweet and silky voice against the gravel of Prine.

Saw them in concert here many years ago.  Great show!  There was some guy yelling for them to do a certain song during the first part of the show.  He was "removed" at intermission.  We were all thankful for that.
Holy smoke.
This is great

Such depth. I'm not a huge Prine fan, but this one gives me the chills everytime. What a gem this is.
Love this song!!!
I love any version of this song that Bonnie does.  And she can really pick perfect vocalist to sing with her.{#Meditate}
Saw Bonnie do this live many years ago — even more amazing than the recording.

Sorry, yer man singing "when ah woz a young girl" in that voice was too much for this listener.
I felt the same way when Shakespeare gave voice to Juliet.

I had a friend a while back who sang a very nice version of this song.  She's the one that first helped rescue my musical tastes from complete disaster (a bit later, the other was of course our illustrious DJ).

Among many other lyrical gems in this song, my favorite is:

If dreams were lightning, thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago
Fred, give him another chance.  He's one of the best songwriters America has to offer.  His first (self-titled) album is a great start - if you don't like that one, I'll let you give up on John Prine.
Awesome. Breathtaking. Beautiful.  Bonnie Raitt and John Prine together are magical...{#Sunny}

Just a beautiful song! I was just listening to this particular version (there are literally hundreds of versions{#Lol}) the other day!{#Cheers}
Just gorgeous.
thanks Bill ~ love ya

Painfully beautiful...
BEAUTIFUL!
One man's snooze is another man's joy - no harm in that.  Steve Goodman's work was done too soon.  I've followed John Prine since high school, many decades ago.

another folky snooze
I have always loved this version with the two of them together.

oh yeah she can SING, Joey!!! Dang!

Mr. Prine is ALWAYS a kick in the pants.!  Oh YEAH!!!

(He wrote it?! WOW!)
This is music.
I have this on a Nancy Griffith CD, "Other Voices, Other Rooms" I think.

I love hearing this song almost as much as I like singing it.  {#Meditate}

Thanks so much for playing that.  This song is a treasure sung by the two of them.
Susan Tedeschi does THE cover of this song - just beautiful.

John Prine and Bonnie Raitt - Angel from Montgomery    ==>    Wilco - Sky Blue Sky   ==>     The Band - The Weight (With The Staples)    ==>    Joan Armatrading - Baby Blue Eyes    ==>    Oi Va Voi - I Know What You Are    ==>     Butch Baldassari Trio - As Far As I Can See    ==>    Outback - An Dro Nevez

!Magnificent!

Saw Prine perform it with Emmy lou Harris; but hard to match Bonnie's raspy and soulful rendition. Incredible song.
This is one of THE Great Songs!! Thanks Bill!

A great songwriter, Prine with Bonnie in tribute to the great Steve Goodman another musician that we lost way to early whos most famous song I guess was City of New Orleans recorded by Arlo Guthrie also  wrote You Don't Even Call Me by My Name recorded by David Alan Coe and  was a guitar player of amazing talents.
Bonnie's songs are all the same: boring.
Bonnie sang this at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival a couple of years ago. Beautiful setting, her voice echoing off the box canyon, an unbelievable sky and my girl at my side. Unforgettable evening.

No way. John Prine, in a BAR? Hard to imagine. Kidding of course. I suspect you're right. I grew up in Montgomery, so this song is dear. Although, as far as I'm concerned, Monkey-town is a good place to be FROM. c.

'Tribute to Steve Goodman' is an outstanding album with a galaxy of star musicians. Hope you'll play more from this one...
I'm sure people will point out that John Prine stumbles a bit in this one--but he's due!!! Besides, Bonnie brings it all back so wonderfully!!! :) I love this song and this version--as much character as any song out there.
I love this song! Bonnie does the best cover ever of this. Great to hear her and the songwriter together.

I like Raitt, but this song stands out above the rest of her collection. 9.
I have always loved this song! especially this version.
Thank you
Can't get much better than this!
Beautiful song.
