Ida blew through last night. at least 2 tornados touched down in South Jersey. One was rather large. houses flattened, unofficial reports of 9 deaths.. Parts of Philly are flooded. The expressway looks like a river with about 12 ft of water on some parts of it. We're ok. we had heavy rains but little wind although there was a possible small tornado about 1/2 mile away. We have a feral cat with 4 really young kittens nesting under our gas grill on the patio. I was afraid for them but they made it though. This is crazy! we have lived in the area all our lives and never saw this much activity.

The worst weather I’ve been in, and I grew up in Lake Charles and New Orleans, where “A hurricane? Oh, it must be Thursday” is a way of life. But this? Thunderbolts and lightning. Very very frightening me. (Galileo) Lying there wondering what I’d do with my sleeping grandson if I started to hear the tornados, since we were right on the interface between the rain and the not-rain, so it was where the majority of the turbulence was gonna be

Torrential rain and flooding -> keep out of basements

I was at the hospital there (visiting), and you'd never know there were houses knocked down a few miles away. Yesterday (the day after), the only way you'd know if rained or the wind blew was some standing water on the grass and some washed-out mulch on sidewalks.
I know there was damage around...but I didn't see much of anything.

This was not a hurricane. It was a tropical storm fully laden with moisture.
NJ gets hit by hurricanes with regular frequency. They come up the Atlantic coast. Once they hit NYC they turn into what is usually called a Nor'easter and inundate New England with huge coastal surf and torrential rain with subsequent flooding. In the winter, they can come in the form of devastating blizzards and snow measured in feet with the same type of coastal ocean surf damage. A Nor'easter can happen any time of year and are not always from hurricanes. They can also be born from systems that roll through the Great Lakes. This is what caused the horrible winters the Pilgrims and other colonists in New England suffered from and caused great harm back in the 1600's on as has been well known and well documented.
I was in Mullica Hill when the tornado came through...and apparently, we are in Kansas at this point.

The really odd thing about the weather now is the random nature of those impacted (3' of rain in one town...almost nothing 5 miles away) and the sheer amount of moisture. I hadn't seen really heavy rains until I visited Southeast Asia a lot...and now we have rains like that. The Northeast flooding is from moisture picked up in the Gulf....it's 1,200 miles away....and still had that much water.

I saw some coverage of that late last night - coupla homes flattened! My family in Monmouth County (Down the Shore) had driving rain and high winds only. Glad you are okay! Our mutual friend in Fluffya is okay too.
