I'm a fan of World Central Kitchen because they are really well set up to provide food to disaster areas quickly and work around the world. Their logistics are second to none and they understand food.

Comics for Common Core!

Ms. Weiss's books project at Maya Lin School in AlamedaCA | High Poverty

My students love comics and I love to see them reading! We get better at reading by reading and the books in Toon into Comics will be a big hit with my students. These books will undoubtedly help my students improve their reading skills.

We are a Title I school with many students living in poverty and many students learning English as a second language. My students speak a dozen different languages and often live in homes without a lot of books. Comics are a great resource for both types of students because they are fun, engaging and accessible.

Reading is a gate keeper to success in and beyond school. Students get better at reading by reading. They need fun, engaging, accessible books that they can read successfully and independently. These books can help my students to become better readers and to be more successful in and beyond school.

If students can read, they can do and be anything! If students enjoy reading, they'll read more. Toon into Comics will help us read more and enjoy reading more. If students are successful and enjoy reading, they have a foundation to be successful students throughout and beyond school.

My friend Betsy is a genuinely good person. I've known her and her husband, Tom, for almost 3 decades, and I'll tell you this since Betsy doesn't read RP forums: she could have taken a nest egg from daddy and never really need to hold down any job, and Tom could have made many times his teacher's salary with his education. Instead, they chose to become teachers.

I thought about posting this to Radio Paradise Comments, then had second thoughts...

I was a pretty regular RP contributor up until these past few months. I think I stopped after the last of the iPad giveaways (was that May?).

That said, I know I regularly derive a lot of benefit from RP, and it's not just about the music. A good part of it is hanging out on the RAFT and chatting up you folks. So today I finally remembered to send in a contribution via PayPal.

It's my hope that this note will prompt some others of you who, like me, perhaps haven't been as regular in your contributions as you know you'd like to be.

DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need.

Here's how it works: public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class.

Then, you can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that makes your eye twinkle. Once a project reaches its funding goal, we deliver the materials to the school.

You'll get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If you give over $100, you'll also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.

At DonorsChoose.org, you can give as little as $1 and get the same level of choice, transparency, and feedback that is traditionally reserved for someone who gives millions. We call it citizen philanthropy.
