Ouais....     It was not just the music of the counter-culture and Vietnam War era piped into my parent's living room.   It was so much more than that.

CHOM taught me that it was OK to like if not love all kinds of different music from Classical to folk to country to jazz to R&B and Soul.  CHOM never played Country and Western but I took the spirit of CHOM with me when I hitched to BC in the spring of 1975.   I grew to love C&W music.    These days I am that annoying person who enjoys U2 and Abba.

CHOM taught me that it was cool to be of a multilingual, multicultural background.  That being different, weird and caught part way between many worlds was OK.

CHOM  confirmed that the Silent Revolution and québécois nationalism were actually working.   CHOM was my introduction to contemporary québécois pop music which I came to love.  I kinda feel sorry for many of my fellow English Canadians who have no idea of the richness and depth of the popular music that came out of Québec during the 1960s to 1980s period.    Two solitudes I guess.

CHOM showed that a bunch of dudes stoned on hashish could still maintain a reasonably intelligent, insightful and incredibly funny conversation.  Or riff if you prefer.

CHOM introduced me to George Carlin.

Yeah....  Huge influence for just a radio station.

Once upon a time, in the old world of dragons, courageous knights and fair maidens, there was only ONE stream.

For me that ONE stream came close to the eclectic flow of music that gushed out of bilingual, cosmopolitan CHOM-FM in Montreal in the late 60s, early 70s.   Might be some nostalgia at work here.

That single Radio Paradise stream delivered an incredibly diversified stream of music which in and of itself I really enjoyed.  Part of my thing is having the DJ introduce me to unfamiliar music and music that I do not like.   On a regular basis.

In passing, I was listening to World/Eclectic/Global music long before I ever discovered RP.  A good deal of it right on location.

I have to admit, I grew up on an already eclectic mix of music as a kid. Loved classical when I was a baby, then onto jazz, then rock, and now a mix of genres.

For the longest time, I could not find a station that suited my tastes. Most stations I came across were pretty limited, as far as playlists were concerned.

Came across RP ten years ago now (!) and have been listening since, because I am continually surprised by what I hear. Thanks, William, Alannah, and Rebecca for expanding my tastes and introducing me to music I would not have known about.

Nice, how you put it all down, starting from the 60s and 70s. So we have a lot in common.

And yes, THAT original SINGLE RP Stream did a lot to me and my listening in the past, too, before there ever were multiple streams on RP.

I simply wasn't aware you were referring to such olden days.. similar to when we, our group of friends were buying records on vinyl, listening to them and passing them around among each other to listen to on antique stereo systems, often owned by our parents, while we were high-school kids.

I well remember your hunch for world music, as well as PFM
And yes, I am also (totally) missing the DJ of the House, introducing me to (meaningful) new tunes. I guess this feature was something of a time that may have gony by, by now, sadly.
And it's not the DJ's fault, even if his focus seems mostly restricted to music from America. An era seems to have gone by in that respect, taking all today's music sources into account. What else can be new, after what we've had. And shared. And loved. Up to inhaling our last breath.

The new streams diversity? What happened? Did the change from World/Eclectic Mix to Global Mix affect you that badly? This seems somewhat hard to imagine for me, sorry to say. Any other "new streams" I didn't get to notice yet?

As for myself, I'm still waiting for the announced and promised "new music" - apart from the Main Mix that seems to be undergoing a (very, very) soft form of refreshment done by William, just lately.

Well, I finally had enough!!    Radio Paradise has been impressing me with the music selection and sound quality provided.  It never gets old.  I happily submitted my $ support to this very worthy service.  I used to just listen to the radio or music from my limited collection of CDs and vinyl, but not really expanding my likes a whole lot.   I recently got back into Hi-Fi again after 20+ years away from it because my son started getting into it, which has been a lot of fun.  RP came already set up on the Bluesound Node2i streamer I bought, and the sound quality of the RP stream was much higher than I expected it to be.  I now subscribe to Amazon HD (my son subscribes to Spotify Premium), but most of my new music choices come from songs/artists I hear on RP.   I notice very few repeats, some familiar artists (often deep tracks not heard much), and many artists that are new to me.  I then go to Amazon and find the album, and add it to MyMusic to listen to later when I can do some more critical listening.  This has been a very valuable service for me!   BillG and Rebecca, I really appreciate the work you do to provide a nice variety of well-recorded music that flows together so well!

My thanks as well.  Is it just me or is Bill getting positively loquacious (for him) on the main mix?  A lot more anecdotes, it seems. I love it but is out of character for a normally minimalist guy.  Maybe we are all a bit more reflective these days.

Many thanks for consistently good programming.

I too want to say thanks to Bill & Rebecca for the "Keep calm and carry on" messages dispersed within the soundtrack of these challenging times. RP has always been on in my house as a calming influence since I realised just how important it is to be able to immerse yourself in great music. The playlist for the past few days have been absolutely spot on (for me - YMMV).
 Stay safe everyone
