Whenever we're experiencing drought conditions, the local empoundments get low and then the city fills them up again. This is done by moving water down the river from another empoundment about a hundred miles to the northwest. Canton lake (the one the city takes water from) is owned and managed by the Corps of Engineers, but the water rights are owned by Oklahoma City. This arrangement has existed since the early 1950's.

Every time it happens, the people who live around Canton Lake whine about it.

Snowflakes.

Sorry, just a story about puking. Also no bears sniffing Abi's head.

My other favorite/notfavorite Red Lodge story was the time we were driving JFW's mom through the mountains on the same route you and Buzz got to go on. As we approached Red Lodge, I confidently said, "and in this meadow up ahead on the left, there's always a big ol' bull moose just watching the world go by." Everyone was horrified to find out I was right, but this time he was literally 4 legs in the air, having expired due to advanced age approximately earlier that day.

Ah, the Yodeler! Just the name is foreshadowing. Red Lodge is about 50 miles away and is so much different (prettier) than our town, we often scoot over there for dinner and especially when the kids and dogs were little, to play in Rock Creek, visit wild turkeys, and have a beverage. But back when we were just married and broke-er than usual, it was also a cheap night away for a mini-vacation. JRZY has been there, even! Red Lodge doesn't really do corporate, but there are some corporate owned motels now. But back then it was all one-owner places that I really do miss. Being an old mining town, Red Lodge has a history of various nationalities doing their little enclaves, and even have held a "Festival of Nations" for probably close to a century. So you get the Yodeler, the Chalet, etc. motels instead of Super 8.

We'd been married maybe a year, max. 2 years, when JFW's sister came to visit at Christmastime. It's always fun to say "let's go to Red Lodge for dinner!" and then take out-of-towners on the most convoluted backroads route just to make them think we're in a more out of the way place than we really are. So we piled into the little red Ford Ranger and bounced our way over the dirt roads to the Yodeler, and checked into 2 adjoining rooms that share the star of the Yodeler show: The ThermaSol In-Room Steam Bath! You go in and close the shower door and crank it up for a fantastic warm-up after a long day skiing.

We all met up with my mom & dad and sister and her kids and went for dinner at a local place that really did do good food. Every place in the world does some form of pizza and even though most of the menu there is Mexican, their pizza was also top notch. We got a few varieties but when Justine ordered the one with gorgonzola and I think pears and bacon? everyone sort of had that "that's not pizza" face so when mom said "I just want pepperoni," I suggested we do that one half & half. Mom did not eat any of the gorgy side so SCIENCE it wasn't the mozzarella. After a few slices and a few beers, we wandered in and out of bars on main street, eventually winding up back in our rooms, cold and wet from tromping thru the snow, so DEAR GOD THAT'S ENOUGH SCOTT you can fill in the rest. S-I-L on the other side of the door did not have gorgonzola pizza but while we were occupying the commode in alternating 10-minute rotations, she was forced to go heave into the Yodeler's hedges because just the sound of us made her lose it too but we had the room occupied for hours.
